Why are there so many cartridges?

Why are there so many different cartridges? Really the answer here is history. Practically since firearms were invented there have been numerous calibers. mostly because different combatants arbitrarily chose to make different barrel sizes. From then on it was military development trying to make their weapons more effective. Once militaries put design contracts out to tender the flood gates opened. Multiple designers would invent multiple cartridges to submit for contract, some got accepted, and lots not, but with all the $$ invested in R&D and often by private firearms manufacturers, the failed bids entered the civilian market.
This type of proprietary cartridge by manufacturer likely accounts for most of the cartridges on the market today as the trend continued for civilian use and the hungry sportsman market. If Winchester or Remington, or Ruger or whomever had substantial sales then that cartridge would live on in the newer guns, even if better rounds were developed as the market was established and new guns would still sell in old familiar chamberings. This also accounts for why there are so many similar rounds. If Remington developed a great round and held the patent on it, naturally Winchester would have to follow suit and would develop something that performed similarly, but varied enough to meet patent laws, and vise versa. This is not limited to the two big American manufacturers, but other makers and European markets as well.
In peace time civilian needs didn't equate to military calibers, and with a glut of surplus guns, wildcatting military cartridges became big and are the basis for most of the common cartridges on the market today. Naturally most manufacturers adopted theses military based chamberings because of their success and freedom of patents.

.45, and 30-06 ,12 guage ,.22 covers all your bases with all cartridges PROVEN for over 100 years,

that being said... why do we have Phillips screws/drivers when robertson is obviously the best? why do we have pepsi when coke is obviously sooo much better? why do we have hot dogs come in packs of 8 but hot dog buns in packs of 12?

Why so many cartridges ?

Why the hell not ? It is the constant search for the perfect gun in the perfect cartridge. When or if I finally find it I think it will be a sad day. But the good news is that it does not exist.:D

Some day however someone will take a .577 T Rex and neck it down to .17 cal. The velocity will be so great and the trajectory so flat the bullet will circle the planet and hit the shooter square in the arse.

Sometimes it's strategic - Everyone and their cousin will be looking for .30 cal bullets to use in their reloads, leaving the 100 gr Varmint grenades and the 200 gr match bullets behind on the shelf... Not so much with other, less common varieties :D

The more obscure the cartridge, the more you 'save' by reloading instead of purchasing factory ammo. That might help some of you married folks explain your reloading time/purchases ;)

They chose to use a .50BMG instead. :D

Its evolution basically, wonder how many 22-250 shooters there are that have never heard about a 250-3000 savage? How many would care? How many have wondered where the 250 comes from in the name and just shrugged it off?

As a previous poster pointed out, sometimes its just all about the WTF factor!!

Why not? I compare it to eating steak and potatoes everyday. At first, it would be great. But after awhile it would get boring. Variety is great! I was very happy when the .308 Marlin express was released. It combined the power of a 30 cal. bullet in a lever action rifle. Of course, I have been buying a box or two of shells every time I go to the local gun shop on the basis that the calibre isn't the best selling out there....

those questions r much too deep for this form...

Well kept guns last hundreds of years and cartridge development has evolved over that time. From cordite to smokeless, to better powders, to smaller calibers in military arms, to short mags. Technically, there are slightly more efficient/shorter action cartridges that should replace the need for the 30-06, but because it has been around so long, there's excellent existing support for it.

also, I can make a 30 06 cartridge shoot a 30 cal bullet with a load that mimic's the .308/7.62nato,

and for newer rifles that can handle more pressure then the 1906 era rifles, the 30-06 can be loaded quite hot.

I like to think of 30-06 as the thinking mans .338 lapua...

but mostly I just like shooting the round my grand daddy used to shoot at nazis

which makes me think... we have zombie ammo, why not anti nazi ammo too?

I bet I could make $ just selling the cardboard box sleeve...
