M1 Garands.
I am always on the market for one.
But I often see M1's in questionable shape and they are well over a grand.
What caused this precedent to be set?

Im sure Ill pick one up someday but for now these people can keep em.

Growing demand and a stable/shrinking supply. Inflation also does its part.

a lot of garands you are seeing now are parts guns--built up from spare parts.
the cost to build a garand right now from parts, not including several hundred bucks in tools such as reamers and action wrenches/barrel vises,is somewhere in
the neighbourhood of 12-13 hundred.then they need a sandblasting/parkjob and a stock.thats more moolah.if you see one under a "G" grab it.1 was on the EE and it sold quick.
that is if you can find spare parts.ordering stuff from the U.S. will cost more.the parts are drying up and within a year or two there will be nada in parts...

The answer to every question like this is supply and demand. If you are not willing to pay what other people are, then you are not "in the market" for one. Of course, if supply increases, or demand decreases, the going price might go down.

I have one that was manfactured for the US Navy and was in storage paid 1600 for it and it can fire 308 win. They cost so much because thats what people are buying and selling them for some really beat up ones have a high price but once in a while you see a nice one for about the same price its about how much you want it and what your willing to pay. You can call it over priced but no one is forceing you to buy it.

PS I won't sell mine...

You could offer me 2000 for it and i would say no...

A lot of people don't realize that WWII era stuff is drying/has dried up. Back in the day, this stuff was plentiful and relatively cheap. I run into these (mostly older) guys who'll tell me that they'll never pay over "X" amount for say, a k-98. But they don't realize that even finding one that's not really beat up is getting tougher and tougher. And prices are rising accordingly.:(

I was going to sell mine; I took it and one of my sons to the last pumpkin shoot so he could torch off a few more rounds out of this piece of history before it was sold.

He started the day with a Norc shorty and I started with the Garand. Somewhere around the first "ping" I noticed the range was getting quieter. By the second "ping" I realized that everyone nearby was watching me, and I also realized that I was having too much fun to sell this rifle. They are very enjyable to shoot...there are lots around but not too many for sale.

One of those guns I want, but not at that price. You can buy SVT-40s for 300 dollars right now and in America they are up around the price of Garands. A much better investment.

blame band of brothers, saving private ryan, etc.

That's the most logical answer! :D I love it! You think like I do!

I just gotta add, 'tis the fault of Call of Duty "World at War", Day of Defeat and other on-line games !! Then I'm gonna blame the Airsofters who obtained their PAL's and bought M1 Garands. LOL ha ha ha ha ha

Cheers,
Barney

I guess you can partially blame me. My first gun was a Garand because of the original Call of Duty. Boy am I ever glad I got it when I did!

Not going to get cheaper.

Wise words. In 2009 when I started looking at one they were $650-700. By the time I got serious about it and bought one in mid 2010 they were $850. Now they are $1000+ with most going for $1200 or more.

Ill pay 800-1000 but over that I wont even look at it

Then you will never own a Garand unless you fluke into a spectacularly great deal.

Almost can't get one now for under $1200. In a few years time $1200 will probably seem like a steal. Best get one now if you really want one.

More wise words. I waffled for a few months and it cost me $150 more.

Im willing to bet alot of them are tied up in a bunch of old mens estates. There will be more to be had.
Tons in korea and vietnam still I bet

The Republic of South Korea recently found 80,000 non issued M1 Garands in storage, they are being shipped to the United States and will be sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) soon.

Like Toyboy sad, it is hard to build a garand under 1200$ these days. I just got a preorder from a gentleman from BC, he would like to have WW2 SA receiver with 308 criterion barrel. By the time she will be built will be close to 1500$. Not including reaming, I don't have a 308 reamer yet unfortuneatly. Will post pictures when ready.:)
