Before everyone thinks I am against them, I am not. I got into an argument with a friend last night over the topic. I've seen a similar topic before, but searching the forum turned no results for me.

Having said that; the debate was why average joes like us are able to own Assault Rifles. I will quote his arguments in red and mine in black. And lets not make references to the United States, strictly Canada. I would appreciate if you read the whole post so you can see what was already said, and respond to his questions with your own answers. Maybe if they come from someone with a better answer, it can show him that ASSAULT rifles are only a demonized cosmetic semi-auto - that is no more dangerous than the next gun in the wrong hands.

  1. Why do you need an assault rifle? I don't need one, I have it for the sole purpose of target shooting and having fun.
  2. So if you don't need an assault rifle, and there are similar rifles capable of firing the exact same cartridge, why would it be an issue to ban them? The "Assault Rifle" has a scary name which gives it a bad image. In the hands of licensed/screened owners, it is nothing more than a semi automatic rifle which is easy/pleasant/fun to shoot. If I bring friends to the range, they can have a better experience than a .22LR - and not have a sore shoulder afterwards. They are no more dangerous than other higher caliber semi autos I can buy off the shelves at Bass Pro.
  3. Why should you be able to own a gun that is capable of firing fully automatic when altered? There is no reason for someone like you to own one. First off, I am a law-abiding citizen who has no intention on converting the firearm into an illegal variation. As previously stated, I own one simply because I can (and also previously mentioned reasons). The danger lies with smuggled fully-auto rifles in the wrong hands. Not legal semi-autos in the hands of a screened/licensed citizen. The "ASSAULT" rifle is not ONLY for killing humans, it can be an excellent target rifle (and would also make an excellent hunting rifle for quick follow up shots).
  4. So if you have other guns, why do you NEED an assault rifle. **classic car argument*** why do you need a Ferrari?
  5. Thats a bull#### argument, cars are designed to get from point A to point B, not to kill. Yes, but you dont NEED a car that can exceed 300kph, as there is no where in Canada you can drive past 100km/h.
  6. You can take a Ferrari to a race track and use its full potential...I take my "ASSAULT" rifle to the range and use it there. There is absolutely no difference. I am a licensed owner of firearms as the driver is a licensed owner of a Ferrari. We are both trusted with the extreme consequences of each, and acknowledge the dangers they can create given the user is not licensed/trained/screened. For that reason alone, if I have undergone the entire process and use it at the range as a driver would drive at a track, I should be trusted with what I have.
  7. Why does the military use this style of firearm then? Because they are extremely capable of killing. All firearms are capable of killing. My 12ga slug is waaayyyyy more capable of killing, but you aren't against those?
  8. Slugs have a legitimate purpose in hunting. As do .223s. There are other semi-automatic .223s that are not restricted - how come they aren't bad?
  9. YOU OWN A F**CKING ASSAULT RIFLE, CAPABLE OF BEING ALTERED TO SHOOT FULLY AUTO. IF THAT FALLS INTO THE WRONG HANDS IT WOULD BE DEVASTATING. WHAT IF YOU SUDDENLY BECAME DEPRESSED ONE DAY, ASSAULT RIFLES MAKE IT EASY TO MASSACRE LARGE AMOUNTS OF PEOPLE If any of my firearms fell into the wrong hands it would be devastating. Thats why I take all the necessary precautions as a legal/responsible owner to ensure that does not happen (safe, trigger lock, bolt removed, etc...). If I suddenly became depressed I could jump off a bridge, or even take my F-150 and drive it down a sidewalk downtown. Or even make a bomb out of a pressure cooker! Guns are just an inanimate object, they are not dangerous in the hands of responsible people.

SO. My request from you guys is to give me reasons that I could forward on to my friend. I think I pretty much covered it but I would like the following answered with your point of views.:
Why do you own one?
Why should we have them?
Why are we currently able to have them?

Thanks for time guys.

Educate yourself. You DON'T own an assault rifle, you own a semi-automatic rifle. f:P:

This is an argument from a person who has no belief in personal responsibility. Argue with him all you like, but understand you will get nowhere. Women LOVE men who protect and provide for them. Given the tools good men can do a good job at doing just that. There will always bad people doing bad things with anything. Assault rifles were designed to kill and kill bad people and just pray tell is the problem with that? Doctors kill more people with bad prescriptions every years than guns could ever kill in Canada. So why not ban Dr's? Its a stupid argument on the surface but its just as stupid as your friends position. A civilized society wants good men armed to keep society civil.

This is something I read somewhere, and thought it made a bit of sense, take it however you like.

Assualt Rifles are Prohibited. No new licenced firearm owner can own them or obtain them legally, unless you are Police or Miltary. Assualt Rifles are firearms that can be selected to fire Fully Automatic or Semi Automatic or Burst Fire.

Anyone feel free to chime in if Im incorrect.

Your definition of an Assualt rifle is based on cosmetic features and not on functionality. If it looks like a miltary firearm does not mean it is so.

We do NOT own Assault Rifles.
By legal definition and by Law we can't own full-automatic-able firearms.

Why do I need a type-xyz rifle?
Why did Rosa Park need to sit in the front of the bus?
No further argument is needed.

1 - get new friends, the types that share your views and even if they don't, they at the very least respect your opinions and your freedom to have your own opinion and choice
2 - stop posting the same thing 7-ways-from-sunday

Seems appropriate ...

Your first mistake was engaging in a debate that you entertained the term "assault rifle". It was obvious from your counterparts first question that he/she us clueless. I have tried in vain to debate with those types, there is no winning.

Undoubtedly you guys have the same opinion as me, or I would not be here in the first place. Again im sorry for posting twice, I'm new to CGN. The thing is, my friend is pretty right wing- with the exception of this topic. He does believe in personal accountability - but for some reason he cannot wrap his head around my standpoint.

I didn't actually use it in my argument with him, I emphasized semi-automatic .22calibre rifle. I'm just using it as sarcastic emphasis because it annoys me.

First off, you DON"T own assault rifles. Assault riffles are full auto. (I believe we should be able to own them as well, but I digress) Secondly, you are not likely going to change the mind of an Anti just by giving them real facts. They are Anti because they are scared of something they are not familiar with and do not understand. SOMETIMES, you can win them over by letting them shoot yours, but many of them are not even open minded enough to try.

I wouldn't debate any further until he accepts it's not an assault rifle...... negating his question in the first place.

My semi-auto .223 just looks Tacticool.... it's useless in a full-auto gun battle..... well ok, not in better hands than mine. :)

he did insist he is willing to try it. hopefully it will change his mind. and again, I know its not an assault rifle, but that is what he consistently referred to them as.

Assault is an action, rifle is a thing... Assault rifle is a rifle used to assault things. If you are not assaulting anything then all you have is a rifle...
