Why Beretta sporting models using older Mobile chokes?

Still a few (older) Beretta Sporters on the racks with Mobil chokes ... older stock than the newer Optimas.

12 ga. Optima bore/Optima choke guns first appeared in 2000 in the DT10's, and were followed by 682 Gold E's, AL391's, & Urikas by 2004. Some 12 ga. target models still have Mobil's including the 686 E's and 686 White Onyx.
20, 28 & 410's remain Mobil chokes. Custom shop guns like the SO5 can be ordered with either fixed, Mobil or Optima chokes ... and the Mobil chokes work just fine, but perhaps just not as convenient as the extended colour coded Optimas. Beretta extended colour-coded Mobil chokes are available in the "Victory" series - with 8 different constrictions, Cylinder, Skeet, Imp. Cyl.,
Light Mod., Modified, Imp. Mod., Light Full & Full ... so - if the gun is one that suits you, don't let the fact that it has Mobil chokes slow you down !

Optima chokes were introduced to replace Mobile chokes when Beretta went to lighter "backbored" barrels in their 12 gauge target guns. This is very noticeable in the 682E series where an Optima choked gun is less barrel heavy than a Mobile choked o/u.

The Optima chokes are a little longer than the Mobile chokes which follows the trend of longer choke tubes which is said to reduce pellet deformation.

I wouldn't turn down a Beretta just because it had Mobile chokes. In some respects I like them better. The Optima chokes don't have a notches in the end for a proper wrench. And the crappy little choke removal tool is a POS. I replaced it with a Carlson choke tube wrench. Also the colour coding on them wears off quite quickly meaning you have to squint to see the stamped designations on the side of the choke.

I've not noticed the colours wearing off the Optima extended chokes, but the original "writing" on them certainly does. You will get used to what the colours are very quickly. I've only used the wrench on a choke maybe once in 7 years on the DT10 and never on the 391. Generally its a bigger challenge to get the chokes to stay in firmly ( a little choke tube lube helps ! )

Quite agree ... doesn't matter to me whether it's Optima or Mobil ... they both work well. My older 682 Gold with Mobils was entirely satisfactory before I upgraded to the DT10 - and would have been just as happy had the ASE90's with Mobil chokes stayed in regular production.
I have since then. acquired a 391 Parallel Target ... Optima bore ... so for me it was natural ... I already had a dozen or so chokes for the DT10.

True enough. The colour doesn't wear off but the writing does and I have trouble remembering which is which and heaven forbid if the shooter is colour blind. Finger tightening the chokes doesn't seat them securely in my 391. I like the little extra offered by the wrench but agree that choke lube helps keep them in tight.

I like the lighter barrels on the Optima o/u although can't feel any difference in the 391. My Mobile choked 682 Super Sport was okay with 28" barrels but the 32" version I shot was very barrel heavy.

CB:

A bud is still shooting his 30" Super Sport ... and it toowas a little nose heavy until some balancing was done. Overall, I think wood density has a lot to do with balance from gun to gun. The 682 Gold 30" I had balanced right through the front edge of the hinge pin and the DT10 is the same - no weight in it, but I did change cast & pitch.

I haven't gotten down to Brass tacks with the 391 Parallel Target yet (as to balance) but will soon... it's a 28-incher and shoots very well " as is ". Took me about an hour dinkin' with several shims to find the right fit for me...
which is a little "high" for most, with nearly 3/8" cast-off at the heel. I've run a couple of 25 straights at Skeet with it so far, and a bunch of 23's/24's on the 5-Stand ... (yes, the odd-one still gets away !) On average, I would say I shoot it almost as well as the DT10. Looking forward to a couple of full
100 bird Sporting courses to see what I can do with it ! ( Also "playing with it a bit ... 1500 +/- rounds through it so far ...without cleaning it. I want to see how far it will go before it hiccups ! )

Like my "B-guns" a lot ... but do sincerely appreciate the "K" 's & "P" 's ... just not for me !

That's a good point about wood density. I also owned a 30" Beretta 682X with a stepped rib that balanced well enough but that could be because of the larger stock and the adjustable comb hardware.

Is the PT a new acqusition? I use a 30" 391 Sporting Optima as a back-up to my P-gun and I shoot it just as well as the o/u.
