Why buy an AR?

I've always wanted an AR. They look cool, they sound like a blast to shoot. The only think really holding me back is the fact that they are restricted. Are the benefits worth the cost of being only able to shoot at paper down at the rifle range? Are there any particular shooting sports/leagues that involve AR shooting?

I only really ever shot handguns, so it wasn't a big deal going to the range to shoot AR's.
They are fun to shoot but almost as much fun to work on.

Still it would be nice to go plinking at the quarry with one. Maybe someday when I move to Texas.

An AR is the Honda Civic of guns, you can pimp it up as much as you like (looks, calibers..), with many Canadian distributors now getting serious about offering high end gear for AR's it's getting to be too much fun and expensive. I would say that if you don't intend on spending mucho dollars on these, best stay away, they are addictive :D and don't think I am joking either. A stock rifle can be had for 1,500$ or so but the accesories can become a disease of which I am not looking to be cured from ;) but just kept under control....time for my meds now :D

I want one...but I only like the shorties. Like 11.5". Hell, if it's restricted anyway, might as well get it as short as possible.

Same deal with handguns isn't it? You can't take them anywhere but the range either.

And why not get involved in tac rifle or service rifle shoots? Gives you another dimension to enjoy your rifle.

Just like regular ipsc gives you a chance to "use" your pistol in a different context than the usual range day.

I agree completely. The intercheagability of MILSPEC parts is fun and relatively inexpensive. regardless you are always limited to 5 rounds with any semi auto 5.56 and the AR parts and bits are plentiful and readily available.

Interchangeable parts, mags, etc. etc. etc. Also lots of expertise out there ...

...and yes .. beacause you can.

I've been thinking of picking up one of the left-handed Stag 15's that Wolverine has for sale. I think they are going for $1675, with a few extras.

A lot of good reasons were ahead of me, here's some of mine:

- ammo- cheap to shoot: 320$ a case, and cheap and easy to reload.
- easy to shoot: no recoil, little muzzle blast, so no flinching etc that screws up many shooters of larger calibres. This really shows when you take your wife/gal friend out. makes your hobby easier to do if you can share it.
- robust. Plain lasts a long time.
- accurate, good range (tough to find a 1,000 m range, plenty of 300 m)
- I REALLY like the fact that me owning one pisses of the Liberals/PC crowd.
- Comfort. The telescoping stock sold my wife, plain fits.

All boils down to fun to shoot- light, accurate, fast, no recoil, cheap.

UW,

I wondered the same thing initially...but then I thought "Aw, what the hell!"

I soon had bought an original AR15 SP1 for about $1000 and it is so much fun I can hardly believe it.

Really, it IS worth it. Just go buy the damned thing, so you can start writing back to us telling how much fun you are having.:)

Best wishes, Jeff.
