Okay, so trying to narrow down the next rifle. I've been borrowing a buddy's remington 700 in .308 for a few years and possibly for a couple more. I've been quite lucky with this rifle and have dropped a few nice deer with it, although no chance my buddy will sell it to me. So looking at budget rifles, as that's all that really fits my budget so have been thinking about the Remington 783. I already have a savage axis in .223 so want something different if I go .270, .308 or 30-06. I've also thought of a marlin 336 in 30-30 with a scope. As I still have my buddy's 700 I'm not sure what to put next on my list. The 700 will handle the farm and the 336 could handle the hunt camp although I spend more time on the farm hunting up to 200 yards. I don't have any real long shots at all. My current back up deer gun is my sks.
Thoughts?
I know ill be told to watch the used market, and I am. My decision comes down to rifle for distance .270/.308/30-06, or pick up a 30-30.
Thanks.

What's your budget for rifle and optic?
Do you want to buy new only?

My budget is about $500 for rifle and $200 for optic as figure I can't get much for cheaper. I am watching the local used market. I might like new, but I'm watching used as well. Knowing I have a 700 in .308 to borrow helps. I plan to hit the local gun shop this week to see what they have in new and used. If I go bolt I'd like a detachable mag, but stil considering a marlin in lever for the fun of it.

I would avoid the 783 and go for the Rem 700 sps ( Cabelas has a sale on for $500) , a Weatherby vanguard or a Savage in a caliber you like, there are often some for sale on the EE sometimes for less than new ;) . As for optics again the EE may have some deals, I've seen Leupold 4x scopes for $200 and the lifetime guarantee passes on to the new owner. Good luck in your search.

If you like the 700 so much why not get a 700? A SPS can be had new for $500 if you watch for sales. You might find a older CDL or BDL in that price range as well.

On your budget, get ye to Tradex! A commercial Husqvarna in .30/06 could be easily found last time I checked there. Check the EE for a deal on a good quality scope, don't buy junk scopes or junk mounts.

I have a 336BL in .3030. I got it cause I wanted something fun to shoot and cause it just looks cool in my opinion; nothing as classic as a lever action. I put on a scout scope from Redfield mounted on a scout base from XS Sights and I love it. Using the Leverevolution ammo I took my first deer at 150 yards last year. Took me three shots as I was holding high on the first two and sent them over his back. That ammo hardly drops. I'd practiced at the range for this, but in the moment my brain thought I was lobbing rocks at the deer and not shooting aerodynamic lead rocket ships.

It makes a handy, quick aiming, fun to shoot, powerful enough out to 200 yards easy type of rifle. Rock and roll.
