Why can't I hunt with an AR-15?

Hi ya'll. I have lived in BC city's all my life and as chance would have it I ended up in rural Sask. I always wanted to shoot and hunt but Vancouver and Kelowna are not what you would call conducive to guns and hunting. Mostly cause I was too busy working trying to pay for a home I could not afford. Anywho I have a few long guns now and am enjoying learning about setting up scopes, hunting varmints at the moment (game season is a bit away) and trying to get 3 rounds sub m.o.a. Its kinda like my golf game, 6 or 9 shots of brilliance, mixed with horrifically long periods of utter brutality. At least here in Sask. I can shoot in my own yard.

As for the title , most city folks, me included, had no idea about the restricted being put on what is a fine concept in hunting rifles.

First off, welcome to CNG and Sask. Why can't you hunt with an AR15?? Find Allan Rock and ask him that. He started all this BS!

For the record, ........................................................:dancingbanana:

Welcome to both of you.

An AR 15 is a restricted firearm and can only be discharged at an approved range. That is the law.

Smokechecker, i might suggest you review the rules of CGN in rgards to discussions of illegal activities lest one of the mods censure or ban you. Admitting to commission of criminal acts (yeah, I know...) goes against the pursuit of legal and responsible firearms ownership for which CGN stands.

Thank you for the welcomes. Of coarse no one would ever hunt with a restricted firearm not intended for that very purpose. I do not currently own an ar-15 type rifle. Although this type of rifle would be extremely useful to help me and my neighbors kill beavers and coyotes, due to it's all weather reliability and high accuracy, I can completely understand that the government of Canada thinks they look a little to "evil". Instead I will get a less "evil" ruger mini, or better yet a model Remington 750 with the same capabilities but half the "assualty" look?

Sorry for my tyraid, as a new member it is probably prudent to mind my p's and q's. Sorry to all, I am sure this is more than old B.S. but I am pissed I can't hunt with a.... whatever.
Happy shooting ! gunnutz:runaway:

You could also get a swiss arms rifle to there a little bit more bulky then the ar-15 but still great shooters just a little pricey.

The whole limitations on where and when you can discharge a restricted have to be the real baffler of our time.

Whereabouts in rural ("the sticks" for those of you in the rest of the country) wind up?

Close to the great city of McNutt S.K.
Me and a freind are wondering how hard it is to start a gun club so we can buy restricted firearms and "have somewhere to shoot them". The closest gun club is Yorkton and it's to far away for us to be practical. But that prolly is a question for a different forum

I love it out here, like I said I came from the cities and I finally feel like I fit in here. Tons of work, we can ride our quads and do whatever we want 2 steps out the front door. No traffic, closest neighbor is a mile away, no traffic cops, no one to tell you what to do.
Lots of beavers and yotes, the bounties have bought me 2 new scopes so far.

The government should consider changing the law so its legal for CFO's to hand out ATT's for hunting, to and from a certain area within a specified time/season...

Or they could just make it so every firearm is non-restricted. I mean, we are all licensed aren't we?

Just a little wishful thinking.

They are scarey mean and nasty and black. Now if they were happy nice cheerful they would be non-restricted.

That makes sense with in the context of the current law but non of it makes sense at all. Why is it safer for the general public for me to shoot a rem. 750 chambered in 30-06 than an AR chambered in .223? Why can I hunt with a 303 brit, or m1 garand that have been used to kill hundreds of thousands of people?

Sorry I am sure this horse has been beaten to death for 10 years, but it is new to me.
This is the reason for the stupidity and gun bans, normal thinking Canadians who live in the city like i used to, don't pay attention or care. I had no reason to care, a firearm in the city, always seemed like more hassle than it was worth.

I hate to admit it but I have been the problem for many years  I would never sign a petition to ban guns, but more importantly I would probably not have signed one to save guns. For that I apologize

Contact the CFO to see what is required for a range. You will likely need to bulldoze up a berm. I think it has to be a certain number of degrees above the horizon depending on what's behind it. The perimeter must be fenced, a flag and flagpole to indicate when the range is hot. Insurance rates I think are around $300 per year per each range on the property. So if you could find a few others to help pay insurance, it wouldn't be so bad. A friend of mine just outside of Rosetown has a certified range on his private property.

You could call Canada Firearms, and have one of the ever so helpful front line phone answerers direct your call to the Saskatchewan CFO. You might have to leave a message or two, but they do get back to you in not bad time. Feel free to PM me and I'll try to help you any way I can.
