Why can't I shoot my Glock 17 well?

The sights on the G17 cover the target or should I say obscure it.
Have you tried a pumpkin on a post sight picture?

That would eliminate one thing.

shooting to the left is the most common problem i've seen with new glock shooters.

i fixed my problem by:
1. repositioning my trigger finger so it didn't touch the frame.
2. more finger on the trigger.
3. alot of practice. dry fire atleast double what you shoot live, don't shoot live until you dry fire a few dozen times without the front sight moving(if your sight moves start counting over). then fire 5 or 6 live, then dry fire again.
4. don't switch back and forth between different guns, just shoot the glock until you shoot straight.

It is critical you focus on the front sight. The target will be fuzzy. Just aim at a fuzzy target.

Is thre lots of clearance on each side of the front sight, as in the sight picture above? (pumkin). If not, open up your rear sight a bit.

Make sure your trigger finger is not touching the side of the pistol.

Dry fire. A lot. The single most effective thing you can do. And practice perfect shots focused on the Front Sight!!

There is a possibility that your hand just doesn't fit the G17, there is lots of people who just can't handle the G17 well, hands come in very different shapes from a person to another, and that's why polymer handguns, especially Glocks, don't fit everybody.
Of course training is key...

Try dry firing, with the muzzle about 2 inches from a plain white wall. Just aim and fire, as you would at the range (WITHOUT THE AMMO!!!!). This will let you see what's going on with the trigger, if that's the problem you'll see it. I personally like to see light around my front sights.

I had the same problem of grouping low and left with my G17, found the magic cure to center the group to be as simple as having to think about the right hand and the pressure I was exerting. Shooting right hand strong of course.

Even after a lot of rounds down range I have to make a real effort to let the right hand relax and use my left more for gripping. Also had to move the trigger contact from the tip towards the first joint a little. Now I am grouping the rounds a little to the left (2") at 20 meters or so. but for IPSC that is close enough for me.

That is one of the many challenges of shooting a new gun.
