Why can't we hunt with handguns?

Exactly. The more "legitimate" reasons we have for owning them the more acceptable it becomes and the harder to disallow.
Do not try to apply logic where none exists.
It had nothing to do with Trudeau the Elder. There hasn't been any hunting with restricted since long before he darkened our doors. Before 1974 too. Did my Hunter's Safety before then and there was no such thing as hunting with a handgun. Hunting regs are Provincial anyway. There's no mention of hunting in any Federal legislation pertaining to firearms other than saying "Not normally used for hunting".
If you needed a handgun to "finish off" wounded game, you need to work on your rifle shooting skills.
Harper never promised to repeal C68. All he ever said he'd do, he has done. The long gun registry is gone. For now.

That is impossible. Millions would have been killed.
OTOH, I guess it was possible. My grandpa used to carry his nine shot H&R .22 revolver or his Marbles Gamegetter .22 / .410 for birds a long time ago.
I would be in favour of handgun hunting if the person had to prove competency with a pistol. I cant count the number of times I have seen people miss the target completely at 10 meters at the range with zero pressure on them and totally calm. those people with buck fever would be wounding animals left right and centre. As long as people are competent and take shots from an ethical distance with a calibre large enough It would be ok by me. I would love to go handgun hunting < I already have the perfect rig. a 14" smith and wesson performance centre 460 with near alpha mount and a Leupold vx=3 scope

Lets leave the competency thing out of the equation....not applied to weapons classification...Oh and this thread is as senseless as our gun laws in the 1st place....none of it is based on fact/common sense or anything other than politics and left wing liberal nanistate nonsense.
Holding people accountable for their actions regardless of the device ould be a good start and frankly 2/3 the way home.
A handgun in a properly designed holster is arguably THE safest firearm when carried around loaded. Maybe appealing to the safety aspect would penetrate the liberal mindset?? Nahhh...
Firearms laws could easily be expanded/collapsed based on geography and use.
ANY firearm regardless of size/type etc should be rigidly scrutinized in an urban enviroment whereas when in a rural or wilderness setting it becomes pretty much irrelevant as to size/type etc.
Hold the individual accountable for their actions with the device....ANY device...it's that simple.

nobody should be afraid of a competency test. If you are its a good indicator that you doubt your ability
If you cant pass one you should practice on paper in sted of blowing legs and jaws of live animals. I am confident I can pass any test they throw at me
I am a range officer and I have seen first hand just how bad the average person is with a handgun under ideal no stress situations. let alone with adrenalin flowing with a monster buck.

Agreed. My only problem with that requirement is that it shouldn't be applicable to only one classification of firearm. Bring it in, but either it applies to all, or to none.

And yet, some still hunt with bow & arrow. The choice of 'tool' isn't the question, but rather the users competency with their choice and its use within their skill level and ability. Ethics comes to mind.
or perhaps a fudd or worst, a gun control advocate. I would like the option to choose for myself what type of firearm to use for hunting.
