Why CCI 22LR Green Tag is much more expensive than other 22?

Have you wondered why Porsche is generally more expensive than VW, or why Cadillac is generally more expensive than Chevrolet? Just like with automobiles, and most other things in life, there are different grades of rimfire ammunition. Generally the cheaper ammunition is not as consistent as the match ammunition, so it usually isn't as accurate. If all that you care about is price, you likely won't see top level accuracy, and you likely won't care, in fact you may have no idea that much better accuracy is even possible, just by changing ammunition. Quite simply, the higher grades of ammunition may be made on different machinery, or by different staff, to different standards, which makes it more expensive to produce, so naturally it costs more. By the way, CCI Green Tag may cost more than the bulk crap that many people buy, but it is cheap in comparison to the top level match ammunition.

Are these things better than mini mags?
For the vast majority of shooters and situations? Not really. Anything you can do with a Green Tag, you can generally do with a Mini-Mag just as well. For hunting, plinking, and general target shooting, there's no real difference.
If you're talking about high-precision match shooting or competitions, then yeah, you'd probably be better off with Green Tags, just to give yourself the best possible edge.
Most people shooting in serious competition, will not choose CCI Green Tag, as they are usually considered lower end match loads. However, I can usually see a difference between CCI mini mags, and CCI sv in my rifles. My RWS and SK loads generally shoot smaller groups than any of the CCI ammunition in my rifles, and they cost less than CCI Green Tag.

It is apples & oranges to compare Green Tags to Mini-Mags... a more fair comparison is Green Tags to SV's... I have done countless (yes, countless) tests comparing GreenTags head to head with SV's out of a couple dozen different rifles, sometimes the GT win and sometimes the SV win... as far as my guns and skills go, there really is little discernible difference... hence, I buy my SV's by the case... When I am serious, I am shooting Wolf MT or SK St.+.
GT is the only CCI I've seen on the shelf in my local shop for months. I've heard the same thing, that it's higher-grade CCI .22 ammo, but not really match-grade at all. I like an accurate .22, but since about 1% of my .22 shooting is pest control...and the rest is plinking, it isn't that big a factor for me. CCI SV is a pretty reliably-accurate ammo in the .22s I like to use most, but, I'm feeling a bit hesitant to use ammo I don't feel I'm able to re-stock any time soon.
I shoot SK standard + at targets because GT does not shoot as well for me. Cost is about 6.5-7$ a box. For gophers I use mini mags or yellowjackets. They shoot well and hit harder. About $3.5-5 box. I seldom shoot the bulk stuff. When you find what you want to shoot I try to get a case if I can. Hopefully that way, you can out last these tempory shortages & those that are trying to goudge you. I have 5-600 green tags here and like them but don't like the price at 17-18/100. I buy the CCI SV at 4/50 with 1800 on hand and seem almost as good. I'll give up .1 or so at 50yds and put 10 bucks in my pocket. The green tag has a couple less flyers but that could be just me
