Why couldnt the FAL be saved?

The FAL was already targeted as a "black sheep" ahead of time, since it was made Restricted back in 1979 or so. That was due, AFAIK, to the Vancouver police chief at the time HATING Reservists, and HATING that civies could own FN's. Supposedly one day a Reservist ran amok on our streets one night, shooting randomly (no one hurt or killed that I know of) with an FN, and so the chief used that as an excuse to justify making them Restricted.

Fast forward more than a decade...when the new laws were comming in to make many things Prohibited, from what I understand, the DCRA's main point about excluding the AR-15 from prohib, was in part that there were already SO MANY OF THEM in Canadian civilian hands. But this was not true of the FN FAL...because it was Restricted (up to this point the AR was non-restr), and also because an FN cost a civie buyer nearly 3 times the price of an AR. So since there was so few owned, they wouldn't have had a leg to stand on.

AFAIK.

"...assume the FAL and C1 were a common rifle used in DCRA shooting..." Nope. Mostly single shot bolt action target rifles. And it's not 'the FAL and C1'. The C1A1 is an FAL with minor changes. As I recall, Canada was the first country to use it and build our own and the C1 was the first semi-auto only FAL.
"...a rational reason to prohib the C1..." You're trying to apply logic where none exists. The Socialist F**ks didn't want 'em as anything, but prohibited. They were black, mag fed with a pistol grip and that was enough to scare Trudeau the Elder and his gang.
"...(there's a trick to it)..." Involves a wooden match, but any semi-auto can be made FA without changing parts

The C2 was full auto ie fun switch installed heavyier barrel ect. You still couldn't hit jack squat with it on full auto but it sure was fun to shoot when they were legal to take outside. Now they're expensive door stoppers.

The big push was from the Liberals and they didn't want a war time type rifle out on the streets so ban them ban them now! That's the crap they do.

MY Grandfather had his from the Korean war they didn't want to give it to him since it was a sample to test but since he used it in combat he said I want my rifle they said no many times he said I want my rifle cost him 10,000 in legal fees to keep it and another 12,000 to buy it so he spent on 1 rifle 22,000. Now they offered him other Canadian issused rifles that would fall off the back of the truck hint, hint no paperwork he said no I want my rifle I don't care about the paperwork I want it and I want it legally. It ended up deactivated and destroyed but he got his rifle and when he was alive he could go out and shoot it then the laws changed and it was a door stopper that came with yearly inspections.

Now he willed it to me as his last will and testament and he told me how to screw with the CFO they made him fight to have it he was going to make them fight to get it from a child. I had a 12.2 for 1 day and they freaked out because I was only 10 at the time and they did it legally and I went haha not signing it out of my name they went O crap. They tried tricking me and they asked why I'm doing this I said it was my Grandfathers last request my FAC expires in a week I will renew it they didn't like that because they would have to renew it as well if they did give it to me. The idea was my Grandfahters neighbor wanted to give my grandfather all his rifles to give to his grandsons since he never had kids or a wife he had no one to pass them legally down to. I didn't get my 12.2 so he got really mad and said screw it want all my guns anyways I'm 92 F them. I just want to protect the history behind the rifles and I trust you so you take them. I said no because they would say I broke into his house and stole them after he passed away and that comes with a 25 year sentence heck no not going there. He gave them away at the local range handed out almost 100 machine guns. Were they went no one knows cops figured some collectors basement.

Your grandfather kept his Korean war, CF issue FAL?

Yeah....right

His story could have some truth to it, the C1 was adapted in 1955 and it was designed earlier than that, so I could see Canada buying some for trials and maybe using some in combat in Korea (kind of like what the Soviets did with the SKS). It wouldn't have been standard issue at that point but it could have been a trial rifle.

Holy crap, it's painful to read a thread like this. So much ignorance.

Full auto with a match stick. Waves of surplus coming to the market. Separatist wars. These are all crocks of ####, to a greater or lesser degree, at least as far as explaining the law that passed in the 1990s. Some or all of these points probably were factors in having the FN singled out to be restricted back around 1980, but that was old news by the time C-68 came along.

At that time, the FN FAL was not singled out to be prohibited, in any way. The only design that was singled out was the AR-15. With that sole exception, C-68 made every centrefire, semi-automatic rifle with a pistol grip prohibited. Unless you know-it-alls think that the HK-91 could be made full auto with a match stick? Or that waves of surplus FAMAS rifles were on their way? Or that northern separatist guerillas were thinking of arming themselves with Thompson M1927A1s? The original poster seems to understand that, I don't know why the respondents do not. The vast majority of Canadian, British, Australian and Indian FN rifles in Canada were manufactured as semi-autos, why couldn't they be saved?

I think the outcome is an indicator to how very close we came to having the AR prohibited as well. It was everything they could do to save that one rifle. Of course, by 1994 the FNs were mostly already gone, with even most militia units using the C7. I don't think the DCRA had much legitimate claim to label the FAL a current service rifle, certainly not enough to fight against the wave hysteria that had every media outlet in the country at the time editorializing about the evils of any firearm that wasn't clearly a duck or deer gun.

LOL well played sir! It brings tears to my eyes at times... except for the times when I'm doing this Laugh2.... or this:popCorn:

The FN was targeted by the government when the Australian FN L1A1's SPF's (Singapore Police Force) showed up. The ones I owned arrived missing the safety sear. Also the bottom of the carrier on the left side that engages the safety sear when the action is closed was ground back even with the right side. Replacing the safety sear was useless.
This causes a serious safety problem, the gun would fire without the action completely closed.
After the L1's arrived lots of Canadian C1 furniture, and parts showed up on them.
The government got upset because most of the parts were compatible.
My first L1 was just classed as unrestricted, then the Government used Order In Council to restrict it.
It was specifically singled out at the time, and I had to register it.
On the back of the PAL next to the 12-5 class it shows OIC #13.
I don't know if its because the FN was listed previously.

Really?

Dude, your stories get wilder each time.

Lever Arms sold the L1A1's in case's of 6 guns with accy's. They were cheaper than buying a good 22 rifle.

My favorite rifle and I can't own one, what bugs me is my brother has one he grandfathered in. :(

FAL G Series Semi Only 12.5

Some FAL's were Semi Auto only though, weren't they? Aren't some 12.3 (CA) while others are 12.5 (SA). It is impossible ofcourse to understand our laws, but its a damn crime we can't have these ( and everything else prohib).

After market receivers without the Auto sear slot. ;) Had a Canadian armourer tell me that would make the rifle unsafe to fire, since it prevents the gun firing out of battery as well.

The lack of a safety sear in my opinion will make them dangerous to shoot, as Grizz just mentioned.
They also played with the bolt carriers on some FN's, so if you put a new safety sear in the gun its useless. You will need a new or unaltered carrier with the safety sear.
You can't win sometimes.

Dave Tomlinson of the NFA once told me that at one time there was a gov't. data sheet out there detailing how they wanted the receivers welded so they couldn't accept a safety sear. There was an opinion out that the gun could have actually exploded if that welding was done as it'd bugger up the heat treatment of the receiver.

This right from DAT.

I bought my first FAL in 1991 from International Firearms, an Ishapore that was selling for $100, and it came with the safety sear installed. A little while later I bought an British L1A1 through a local gun shop but it came without the safety sear. I told them it wasn't safe to shoot w/o the safety sear as it could fire out of battery, and they got me one. Both had to be delivered directly to the local firearms officer (Surete du Quebec) for verification. I was with him when they were checked over. He noted if the safety sear installed, that the selector was the semi-auto version and was not "easy" to remove, and lastly he removed and measured the length of the trigger plunger (a longer trigger plunger prevents the trigger from being depressed to the full-auto stage of the two stage trigger). Reading between the lines you can see that they were a bit too easy to convert to full auto. But as has been noted, without the heavy barrel, after half a magazine the barrel was pointing about 45 degrees up! The same year Belgian made FALs were selling for $350 - good times!

Wow this story changed from a few days ago in your other post. Last time you were 8 when this happened, now you were 10? Funny how your age just jumps like that when your making stuff up hey? Just keep your ridiculous stories to yourself lol..

I had a 12.2 at age 8. They didn't like when I said no I don't think I will transfer it out of my name today that freaked the crap out of them because they gave me a FAC and transferred it to me. It was my Grandfathers last request to make them fight for it so I refused to sign. I had that rifle for 3 hours while they tried to figure a way to trick me into signing it which I said I hear you. My guardians ended up signing and it went poof but for 3 hours I made them fight for it.

I might of been the youngest person in Canada to have a machine gun ever depending if they tried to trick people into signing the paperwork to transfer it through so you can't get 12.2 again. That's why they want people to sign so they can't turn around and go well I want the rifle now that I think about it they go you signed it's to late no prohibited status for you to bad.
