Why did this happen - M14s?

Get a real one......Springfield M1A....I've had no probs with my SAI....

Springfield Armory has had it's own issues with their M1A quality in the past.........;)

I have built several M14 type rifles using Norinco Forged receivers and premium USGI/Match parts that will out perform any Factory Springfield M1A with their commercial cast receivers and cast parts.........for 2/3 rds the price......:p..........Plus Norinco receivers are more dimensionally correct to USGI specs then Springfield receivers are.........:D

Springfield M1As are waaaay over priced for what you get.........you are better off buying a Norinco M305 and using that as a base for a quality build..........and use the money you save for more ammo!!!!!!!

:)

I did get a real one.... over 4 of them... all USGI M14's FA converts! Whatever you do, don't call an M1A a real M14. Truly a different character!

I'll be happy to fix your M1A when it goes down after a Service Rifle competition course of fire! :D And I won't tell anyone! ;)

In 25 years of shooting (read : competition not mirror kommando) the only rifles I've had to repair on the firing line are/were M1A's. I still competed with an M1A NM version, but I swapped out all the Taiwanese contracted parts.

Get out and shoot with your Provincial Rifle Association!

Barney

Brownells pins

Don't get the pins from Brownells. They are for the Springfield M14. The Norcs and Polys are not the same dimensions.
I imported a crate of these to package with the EBRs only to find this out after the fact.

and yes I felt dumb

ab is right. The pins are slightly larger diameter and have to be turned down (read: lathe work). They are a very HARD steel, too!

Easier to carry out the popsicle stick fix on a welfare budget! :D See the sticky(ies) Skullboy and I posted up in the FAQ section.

Cheers,
Barney

FWIW, they aren't so hard that carbide tooling won't cut them - I mod these all the time for ppl on the lathe, but for best fit, I need the rifle to dimension the hole - there is some variance.

GI pins are longer, and LARGER IN DIAMETER.

THIS LEAVES YOU WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT OPTIONS:
1.] You can turn down the GI SPEC pin [ which SHOULD BE hard as he11]
OR,
2.] you can drill out the receiver for the larger pin
[A PROPERLY HARDENED M14 RECEIVER SHOULD ALSO BE HARD AS he11 ]
OR,
3.] you can glue a POPsicle stick inside your $ 850 sage STOCK.

OR,
you can do what I usually do ....
4.] find a piece of good quality 5MM steel rod to make a new longer pin. By a strange coincidence, 5MM just happens to be the correct diameter of the quick release axle on my mountain bike ... and I've got a several spare bike axles.

Why the heck did this happen?

The USGI stock has extra space for parts that are absent from your rifle.

(Your rifle is missing all of the naughty bits.)
