Why do Colt Pythons cost so much

I always wondered what the big deal was with the Colt Pythons and why they cost so much more then other revolvers. I had never used one before today, now I know why.

A buddy of mine bought a really nice like new 6 inch stainless model and he brought it to the range today.

There was a bunch of us and we had Ruger GP100's, Smith & Wesson 586's and 686's and the Colt. We used a whole bunch of different kinds of ammo as well in all the guns and everyone shoot every gun.

Everyone shoot every gun with all the different ammo. There was no doubt about which guns worked the best and which ones felt the best at the end of the session everybody was of the same option.

The Colt worked the best and felt the best of all the guns. The Smiths were as accurate as the Colt but are no where near as smooth to shoot as the Colt is and the Rugers are a distant third to both the other guns.

That is not to say that the Ruger is not a good gun as it is and I am told it is stronger and it may well be I can't prove that either way but for ease and pleasure to shoot the Colt is hands down the nicest of the three makes.

Just for the record I am not putting down Ruger here but rather praising Colt and also I might add that I owned one of the Ruger GP100's.

Back during the Python heyday our Police Dept shooting team used them.
a very smooth and well made revolver.

Pythons were all hand fitted, not so with the cheaper Colts and most other pistols. If you want to compare it to a pistol you can get today, think S&W Performance Shop.

Oh, and I do have one, 4" barrel, with matching Diamonbacks in 38 and 22.

They are nice and known as the "Cadillac of Handguns". I'm on my second as I foolishly parted with the older production first one which had the Colt Royal Blue. However, the second one and the one I still have now is even older, 1957 vinarge.

And it does shoot well. At one point in time I was hot & heavy into paper punching and bullseye shooting. The following is a target shot off hand back then.

My axiom for the past ~ 30+ years has been..... Colt semi-autos / S&W [double action] wheelguns..... and therefore I've never cared to own a 'Python'.

Give me a nicely tuned S&W 586 over a Python any day of the week.

Twice the gun at 1/2 the price.

My .02 only.

Your mileage may vary.... ;)

In the past 45 years, I've had a number of Smith double actions and in a number of calibres, primarily N frames. The single action let off on the double action Smiths is legendary. Like breaking glass, none finer. In 357 Mag, I've had an assortment of Smiths, starting with a model 28, two 27's, one 19 and a pair of 66's. To my way of thinking, in 357 and at the top of the pile is the Python. The finest revolver made in that calibre. Cost a little more, yes but as with a lot of things, you only get what you pay for.
