Why do hunters kill????

Great one liners guys. We all know how uneducated people are about hunting and guns. I posted this column because it actually puts into words what most of us feel and know to be true. And that the people (like myself) who never took enough time to develope our own arguments for the antis, would have some ammo when accusted by the ignorent and closed minded throngs of of tree hugging, granola grunching, fruckdards....

I was looking for more useable material like

A hypocrite is a pitiful person who will buy his steroid and antibiotic laden pseudo meat in Loblaws and then try and chastise a hunter for living true to his Genetic Code!
Big Redd 2006

and not statements like

"Because I can"

My two granola bars worth.

You could say it's part of your herritage, or Canadian herritage.
Leftys love that preserving herritage stuff.

I try to avoid these conversations because inevitably I end up making enemies. I once carried on the conversation regarding hunting and pointed out the woman was a hypocrite for eating meat, but being against hunting. She told me that it was different, because the domesticated animals were born to be slaughtered. I then asked her if slavery was ok, as long as your slaves were the children of slaves. She was black, and didn't like that analogy. So I generally keep my mouth shut as it just gets me into trouble. I don't think there is any risk they don't continue to issue hunting licences around here, esp not because of some houghy toughty that thinks we should be above it.

I find the key is to be enthusiastic about what you enjoy and offer people a chance to go or to try out the meat. Don’t avoid talking about it, otherwise they feel they have the moral high ground, let them try their arguments, very few can argue the benefits of domesticated animals vs wild convincingly. Also tell them about how concerned you are about the “Industrialized food production complex” that is filling you and your family full of deadly chemicals, etc. If they are a greenie, they will have to agree with that position or look stupid. Plus you can argue that as a hunter it is your moral duty to prevent suffering of the animal you shoot and that it does not experience the fear and the smell of death that domesticated animals are exposed to prior to slaughter. You are also far more in touch with what you eat and have a greater respect for the animal that gave it’s life to you and that you make sure as little goes to waste. It is also about staying in touch with your heritage and maintaining an “organic and sustainable lifestyle”

I always love watching vegetarians that say they won’t eat an animal and then put on their leather jacket and shoes…..

My impression is that people who need to debate such a question really aren't ready to understand quite yet anyway. These folks are simply living in a dream-world where things fall into nice, neat catagories with simplistic solutions to conflict of values and ethics. Non-hunters needn't become hunters to understand but they do have to become perceptive. This they have to do on their own.

I do it because you:
A. Get to miss work and school for a week.
B. During that time copious amounts of beer, vodka, and whiskey are consumed.
C. Poker/Cribbage/Euchre games all week.
D. Hunting is fun, shooting is fun.
E. Eating is like... really damn good. All good solid home cooked food.
F. Hearing old stories, and hanging around learning from your grandpa other old relatives.

The only thing that sucks is leaving.

i hunt to feed my family "organic" and healthy meats as did my father and his father and every man there back and if you go down your family tree you will most certainly find a hunter probebly not as far back as you think either.

wild game meat such as deer bear moose and others is leaner has less carcinogenic chemicals added to it during proccessing then store baught meats
besides for the cost of a decent steak at a store i can supply my family of 4 enough meat to tide us over till next hunting season and as an added bonus i can take pride that not only did i skillfully hunt this animal using a level of patience that only a hunter can master but this animal was hunted in its natural habitat without the aid of electric fences pens or other forms of of cruel treatment that a comercial /domestic animal will endure during its short life, i have givin this animal more respect in hunting it, killing it, processing/butchering it, and eating it then any comercial/domestic animal will ever recieve and if you are still wondering why i hunt go work at a cattle proccesing plant for a day then come on a hunting trip with me for a week and you tell me which is more in-humane

There is definately a connection made between hunter and prey, I still dream of my first deer. She was beautiful and gracefull.

When was the last time you really understood a steak(even when it was alive, fenced in) or had a bonding experience with a pork chop?

good answer because ...
$300.00 per pound for vennison just doesn't cut it!

$300 per pound?!?

I think you should go to a new butcher. Maybe try rendering it yourself? Its not really hard, just cut out muscle groups to make roasts. If you want steaks, slice your roasts up. Jerky? just slice smaller...

I think it costs about $60 for a deer, including meal ticket, gas, spices and bullet...

Because it won't sit still on my plate unless it's DEAD.

These self righteous do gooders that frown upon hunting and fishing need to spend a day at the big house where their chicken nuggets are made!!!

As I wrote in a local paper last year...

"If it wasn't for Predators (humans included) then Babi would have never have evolved to be as graceful and beautiful as they have become...it is an evolutionary arms race between the two groups that provides us with the animals we enjoy watching, riding, or eating today."

And next time you chew on some salad consider how many little woodland creatures are routinely harvested/culled by the farmers (yes even organic ones) to protect their crops.

Best source of grass nutritional energy is from eating a cow. :D

Also a button I wear on my jacket:
"I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables". :D

How about we ask them if the fish they eat are any better caught with a net in a fish farm pond, than those caught with a pole in the wild?

I would quess they would think that a farm raised pig in a wallow of #### is better than one running wild!

There is no way you are ever going to convince these dumb ass people that the right to hunt,or to hunt will give you better meat!

They buy some of those brawtwerst sausages and have no Idea of how many anti-biotics that the swine(of maybe 500 or so animals actually have in them)!

When they realize how healthy live game can be,they might get the message!

But I doubt it,most of my friends try to find ways to cut corners,(like one hour of hard excersize will give you two hours of life)!

I think if you can kill it,then charcoal or grill it you are way ahead of the curve!!

Sometimes when I see a deer in my scope I tell it "Your tenderloins or your life!" and each time they have gone about their business as if I didn't exist. How rude!
