Well these old rifles tend to outlast the old soldiers who used them. Old rifles still have a lot of wood; old soldiers, not so much.

The concept of reach was the fashion before WW1.

Look at the total length of the Russian 1891, The French 1886 Lebel and the German Gew 98 with its original bayonet.

The British switched from the short bayonet on the No.1 Mk1, to the long bayonet in 1907.

Interesting in tests it turned out that a short rifle and bayonet is more like to win over a long rifle and bayonet in a non shooting fight.fight.
