why do people hate Mossberg rifles

A quote---"I have never cleaned it - ever. It is fun, accurate, has a decided preference for cheap ammo (didn't like CCI stingers) and was cheap to buy."

My thinking exactly.
I have a Model 69 Winchester that I bought used 45 years ago. With all this talk on these threads about cleaning 22 rimfires, I got thinking, and I had never cleaned that rifle!
So, ran a cloth with a bit of solvent on it, through the bore. One pass, took a look, the barrel shone brilliantly bright.
Sixty years ago they told us that all modern 22 ammo was lubricated and self cleaning. No further cleaning was required.
Years ago Winchester made a test with their top of the line Model 52. They ran 100,000 rounds of standard, commercial ammo through it, without cleaning, then they tested it for wear. They said there was no measureable wear, anywhere on the rifle.

I suspect the lack of cleaning is partially why so many rifles get a bad wrap...Ie they get gummed up and start to jam, mis-feed, mis-fire etc.

My 151 came to me from Marstars used gun section like that...unbelievably filthy and it wouldn't run right until I cleaned her out.

So your mileage may vary.

I am strictly talking about cleaning the bore.
I have shot many thousands of rounds of 22 with a Browning Medalist and never had a single jam. Never cleaned that barrel, either.
As a matter of fact, I can never remember having an action jam. I thoroughly clean the actions.

Ah yes sorry the bore, I thought you were referring to the actions as well.

And yes for the record I have seen a lot more 22's with barrels worn from over cleaning then shooting.

I had a Mossberg semi-auto 22... don't remember the model number. Anyway, I picked it up used at a gun show a few years ago and it ended up being a very poor performer, causing nothing but frustration. I used to get quiet a few stoppages due to poor feeding from both used and new magazines, and all sorts of different ammo. This past winter I traded it in and purchased a 10/22. Having now fired a couple of bricks of ammo out of it, the Ruger is a far better gun in all respects.

Prior to reading this thread, I have never heard anything bad about Mossberg from anyone that has owned or used one. I can only speak from experience with the 3 I have, and I have never had any kind of problem with any of them.
