Why do people love one cartridge and despise another when both are good rounds? The case in point is the 357Sig and the 45GAP. Contrary to what people tell you these are two great calibres.

The 357Sig mimes the 357 Mag and the 45GAP apes the 45acp. I have shot all four calibres and I like all four of them. The 357Sig is accurate, powerful, and a hoot to shoot. On the other hand, I shot a Springfield XD in 45GAP and I did not know it was not a 45acp until after I was done. The 45GAP is in the same power range as the 45acp, fits in smaller pistols, and it as accurate its bigger brother.

Again, I ask why do people love one cartridge and despise another when both are good rounds?

Richard :D

I don't think that people actually hate other calibers. They just say they do to sound like they know what they are talking about, and more generally to piss people off! :D

To each their own, but yes, there is the human propensity to criticize the unfamiliar, or in order to justify one's own personal choices.

I wouldn't personally go with either round, but I do agree that .357SIG is a powerhouse for defensive pistol, and the .45GAP seems marginally better in performance that .45ACP, in a smaller package... HOWEVER: Where the hell do you buy .45GAP?

Different strokes for different folks! I think the majority of firearms folks tend to be traditionalist conservatives, and tend to put on our grumpy old fart hats whenever something "new and improved" comes along, no matter how much better than the old item the new stuff may be.

I mean, for example, look at all these people who love the 1911? I just don't get it, but they will never, ever, understand why I don't?

(Can of worms opening........)

"...why are some folks Leafs fans and some people are fans of teams that win?"

Dan Belisle, because I live the States and in a suburb of Detroit. That is the only reason I cheer for the Wings. RIGHT :D Regards, Richard :D

Personally I think in many instances, particularly in the case of these four, they can all be accurrate, have proper power(though we 'only' use it for paper really) and such.

However, ammo costs or especially in the case of 45GAP, ammo availability may sway someone not to buy such a firearm chambered for it.

I'm guessing it has more to do with the "Answer to a question nobody asked" factor than anything - especially with .45GAP

Perhaps it's because like the fashion industry coming up with something new every year.
One would ask why you need a .45 gap or for that matter some of those short fat rifle rounds when you already have something that will do the same job and is available anywhere.

As you would expect, the academics have a name for that - cognitive dissonance.

Cognitive - for obvious reasons.

Dissonance - to describe what happens in your brain when all logic and reason says "go left" and you turn right.

Behaviourists use this term to describe how we all find a million reasons to love what we already have. That explains why that gorgeous new woman down the block suddenly becomes a dyke when you remember you're married (if you remember you're married) and GM makes the best vehicles on earth (even as you drive to the dealer for warranty repairs).

People like the caliber that they chose and they tend to choose the most common simply because they're most common and easier/cheaper to buy.

because some people question the need for "an answer to a question that was never asked"
