I picked up 10 boxes of Win Xpert game/target load - 2 2/3 -7 shot for $35 bucks a while back. Went to the range for the first time last weekend and saw I could only use 7.5 shot or more. Didnt bother asking anyone so i just picked up a few 7.5 boxes from them.

So my question is why is 7 shot not allowed for most trap ranges? I may ask tomorrow if its possible for me to use the shot so I can get rid of it. :\

Hope someone can tell me

Thanks! :D

It's an ATA rule. No shot larger than 7 1/2 is allowed. I'm sure the range guys don't care on practice night. Just don't try and shoot competition with it, you'll be DQ'd.

The range I went to Waterdown Rod and Gun had a sign saying 7.5 or greater.. Even on their site. Also was told by a fellow I work with that a few other places dont allow 7 either.

Is this just the personal choice of the range?

Exactly. I can't see a reason not to use it if you are just practicing.

Pellet size limitations are often part of the range approval based on shotfall zones. If the rule is nothing larger than 7.5 then leave the larger stuff at home. Most Ontario clay clubs limit shot size to 7.5 or smaller, 2-3/4" shells, 3-1/4 dram, 1-1/4 ouces of shot. Get caught deliberately shooting anything larger or heavier and you can expect to be told to leave and not come back.

..are you sure that those shells are loaded with actual #7 shot? That shot size is rather unusual in these parts.

With regards to the CFO and thier opinion of the needed shotfall area, sbound or Doug the Canuck may chime in here. As I recall, the CFO template seems to have been drafted on a planet with a thinner atmosphere and weaker gravitational field.

Correct on both counts.

Brad.

The range guys care because the range can be shut down if you use ammo other than that for which the range has been approved.

Smaller shot numbers (larger shot) travels further. The CFO gets really pissy if your shot travels outside your template.

I think that the 7 1/2 size limit may be intended for lead shot which has been the norm. Now that there are target loads available in steel the range restrictions may have to be re evaluated. Size 7 steel should have less range. To be safe, I would stick to the letter of the law. If steel target loads become common, I would expect that even size 6 would be allowed.

Went to the range today and they said they allow it! :D I was happy!!

score today was

17/25
16/25
17/25

Just couldnt beat it!!! :D but still impressed with myself shooting that disc! As long as I hit it is all matters! :D

This is a new hobby i just signed up for a membership at the club! :D

Well... not to put a monkey wrench into the gears here, but most Cowboy Action matches at most clubs state number FOUR shot or smaller. So #6 to 7.5 or 8 is not uncommon.

If the club you attend is restricted to 7 1/2 shot, you must follow the rules..

However, you orginially failed to mention that this is steel shot... It certainally would not be a factor in the shot fall distance limitations.. so, if not sign restricted, use your no. 7.. I am sure it is being used now at some shooting clubs in Ontario. I have shot at a private club that allows nothing but steel.

I think that No. 7 is the smallest steel shot available, at least in Ontario.

Not bad scores:D Were you shooting trap or skeet? When you asked did anyone else say if steel was in common use at the club? I know you are a newbie, but what was your impression of how the clays broke?

I asked the owner he said it was fine and was meaning to change the sign. this weekend.

The clays broke pretty good. Some broke in 2-3 pieces and some shattered. I guess it all depends on where you hit it.
