So I need to vent a bit.

I call a local smith to see if he has an action I need....long story there....I'm honest with him and said there is a delay
with my order because of wait time on a BAT action that should have been delivered already but hasn't.

He proceeds to tell me how the guy I ordered from has issues...blah blah....oh and his design is not all its cracked up to be and so on???WTF?

This guy is obviously sour about something but does he really think it helps him to bad mouth another business????

I bought a scope from him before but honestly will never buy anything from him again even if he's the only one who has what I need!

Anyone else experience this??

Usually has something to do with an insecurity...short ##### syndrome. I got that once and told the guy, "Look, I appreciate you may have had a bad experience with "John", but I would appreciate it if you don't cut him down to me. If you want my business, you'll refrain from that type of talk." John in this case, happened to be a friend of mine. Not suggesting you do the same. It irks me too. Unsure if he would have had the same thing to say if they were face to face.

Have you never seen a Pepsi commercial making fun of Coke?

Billion-dollar companies do it for the same reason thousand-dollar companies do it, and politicians make attack ads: to gain a competitive advantage.

After more than 30 years in business I've learned that the old saying is best applied generously in all business dealings..........."If you have nothing good to say.........say nothing" Any one cutting down another's business or personal ethics or workmanship will reap no good from it in any form and usually just leaves the recipient with a bad taste for them, not the one who is being bad mouthed, just as in your case. There is a whole bunch of psycho stuff explaining this form of behavior, but the biggest reason is as previously stated......insecurities..........There are a great many people in all stations in life who think it builds their image to run another down and point out their flaws, real or perceived. They could not be more wrong, of course, but many will repeat this flaw right to the grave without learning how detrimental it is to THEIR image. It is just another of life's lessons that not all will learn in this lifetime.

When hunting in Zambia, I had 2 PHs because we were hunting lion, anyway the 2 PHs (one particularly was very bad) were making fun of another hunter in camp behind his back of course, who's appearance was quite different and he was having a lot of problems hitting game (not all people shoot as well as CGNrs). The one guy was getting quite rude about his comments as the days wore on, until one morning, in front of these 2 PHs, I said to my buddy Gord, "Hey Gord, what do you suppose they say about us when we're not around"..........silence.....red face....no more joking and running down the other hunter.........at least in front of me. But really, it does lead one to think, what ARE they saying about me when I'm not in earshot.

I was debating if I should say something, I wasn't going to but....now the guy is being super helpful sending me emails wanting my business.

I've decided I will send him an email explaining to him that his behaviour on the phone was less than appropriate.

That person has lost my respect and business.

Maybe he will learn from this and change.....Doubtful but may happen

It is pretty common......human nature is what it is . In business , there is a very strong element of competition as the pie is only so big , and everyone is fighting for a chunk of it .......

And what if the guy telling you all this is just being honest and does t want to see you get the ####ty end.
Is it not possible there's truth behind his words?

I don't go out of my way to put other places down but I'll certainly warn friendlies. It is a fact that some people simply should not be in certain businesses, they rip customers off with piss poor workmanship.

I make a point of saying that all our competitors work is no better or worse than ours, we all have to keep a certain level of quality in our work and warranties to honor.

Let your results do your speaking but everybody has good and bad days with good and bad luck.

Try to run your competition down and people wonder why.

There always comes a time when you will need something from that guy across the street.

I see what your saying but in this case I've done my homework and the person I ordered from has a great reputation and a waiting list a mile long. The owner doing the bad mouthing on the other hand no so much, I've heard lots of negative stuff about the guy but because he is local decided to at least buy parts from him to feel him out.....I wont be buying anything else from him that's all I'll say

Also all his comments were really vague. He asked who I got the gun from and never asked if I wanted to know what he thought. He just proceeded to bad mouth the other guy with nothing concrete but just vague negative comments.

There are whiney jackasses complaining about something no matter where you go. Learn to not let them stress you out. They aren't worth it.
