Why do tactical/target and .308 go hand in hand?

We were chatting up a storm last night about placing that same 125 gr. bullet on top of a .300 Win Mag for some maximum earth pig 'blowed up real good' hunts this spring! :D

Heeeeere kittty kitty kitty!

DO it!

One of the fellows on the board here (DonP) built a gopher slayer of epic proportions... he has a 300 WSM with a 16" twist and is shooting 125 Noslers at 3600 fps and it is spectacular!!!! It is a phenomenally flat shooter and he was engaging gophers with impunity at 700 - 1000 meters.

A 300WM varmint killer - while excessive and totally ostentatious - makes my dangly bits tingle with pure excitement.

The .308 win. works quite well out to 1000 yards in experienced hands and with good loads. Between the choices of being beaten up by the 300 wm and shooting the Savage in .308 it's an easy choice for me. I'd take the Savage. Consider that you might want to shoot a match. A match can easily consist of 60 rds. plus sighters. That's alot of recoil and alot of powder. The .308 barrells tend to last a long time too. Consider the cost of shooting each of them. Also consider the specific purpose you,ll have for each.

Best advice yet. Hell, I had to put in extra padding on my shooting jacket because I found my .308 was getting painful at around the 45 round point.
I can't imagine trying to shoot a 300 WinMag competitively.

It's quite funny that "outdated" and cheap Mosin-Nagant sniper load will outperform .308 on 1000 yrds.

People suggest to download 300 WinMag to a level close to 30-06 or event down to .308. Remington's "Managed-Recoil" rounds are also available. Still expensive but you always have an option for longer shot plus a habit of not flinching on hard recoil. I look at this this way. If bigger caliber theoretically gives advantage then it would be wise to train the body to take its drawback.

No pain, no gain

"I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothin' but 7.63x39 is kick-ass"

How do you figure? There may be a SLIGHT advantage because you can maintain .308 velocities with a 180gr bullet but it's not blowin my socks off.

I won't be selling my .308 for a nagant any time soon.

There was some bragging with referencing to some sources that looked quite trustworthy that standard sniper load can achieve greater energy at 1000 yrds. But again, if you load .308 properly I do not see why you can not do better.
