Why does everyone give the axis a hard time?

As for the some people can only afford 400 dollars thing, I sold a lot of guys savage axis combos who were wearing 300 dollars worth of camo on a store visit. One can find an extra 300 dollars in the hunting budget pretty quick if you walk instead of drive...

And like cleftwynd said, anything used.

A savage axis in 243 is probably the most heinous abortion of a deer rifle ever made, I would not shoot hitler with one of those things.

Stocks aren't just "pretty" or "ugly" tikka stocks are uglier than sin and fit well, lots of other examples across the many varieties of firearms. Savage stocks appear to be designed with no ####s given about recoil, cheek weld, etc

Pretty much every gun you can buy has aftermarket upgrades that are recommended.

I've got $1700 into a 10/22. To me it's perfect.

I put $500 into my GF's 22/45 and now it's amazing.

I have $600 worth the parts and a $500 scope being added to my Ruger Mini Thirty.

No such thing as a great $400 gun or even a great $1000 gun. Just treat them all like a starting platform LOL.

Gun snobs... People that feels that you need to pay a premium to shoot and bash cheaper stuff just because

Nah, but call it Snobbish if you like........

Do I really care what other people shoot? No. Do I care what guns I own and shoot? You betcha.

Recently picked up an axis in .223 and it shoots great but yes the stock sucks big time.

Thinking of replacing the stock with a Boyds stock maybe.

you can try reinforcing the stock with Rockite looks like an easy enough job and seems to eliminate flex on the Tupperware stock
check the savageshooters forum for more details.

My wife was just looking over my shoulder while I was reading this thread. Her response was, "I wouldn't let you wear a t-shirt with Savage Axis printed on it."

Cleftwynd: I agree that the axis leaves alot to be desired in both fit and finish however my piont is that it is a tool. And while I like my Browning better than the axis, I paid more than twice as much as he did and we both achieved the same resaults. The axis is a low cost budget rifle that is capable of achieving the desired affect.

In this case the Hunter is reliable. Just because an experienced Hunter uses an axis, does not make it any better than the POS it is.

So, if you saw the best machinist in Detroit using a made in China plastic set of calipers, would you run to the store to buy the same ones because now they are a good tool? Lol
for the SAME $$ as an axis, you can buy a rifle 20x better quality. Just look at tradex, or a used, well, anything.

I would say the axis is a good budget rifle if it wasn't for weatherby vanguard, rem 700 sps, ruger American, or anything else in the $399- $699 range.
I wouldn't paddle a canoe with an axis either.
That being said, I have buddies that have them.

They are an entry level rifle.

Like others have said, if you buy a gun for $400 you get what you pay for. the scopes that come with the Axis's are garbage for the most part. The axis comes with a bushnell, It's only good for a .22 really. i have seen people take a few shots of 30-06 and the reticle dropped. The Axis two has the better weaver scope, but still have heard the same thing happing.

Bolts are stiff, and not extremely smooth. Stock is a little too flexible in the pistol grip area. For someone going hunting just now again and wanting a smaller caliber rifle they ain't bad. Best to throw a different scope on it and buy the extended bases so you can get a shorter scope on there.

Problem now is the canadian dollar is so bad, the axis's have sky rocketed in price. the Axis was $380 last summer, now $460 or so i think. The Axis two are like $570 now, from $480 last summer, too expensive for what you are getting. best to spend a few hundred more and get a tikka, or something of better quality.

in the end it's preference, people love them, and people hate them.

I owned an axis 223 and had a great time
Decent accuracy and banged it into every tree and rock on the trail. I took one shot from an axis 30-06 and thanked the magic guy upstairs that I am still around. Felt like a rubber gun with a hot load.

I know a 'fat girl' and we could almost be considered friends, but honest to God, if I walks into a store, and I see that big girl before she sees me, I'm heading into different shopping aisles so folks don't see me mingling with her...

Call me a snob and a shallow S.O.B....

If you had a choice between skoda and and a audi and you could afford either, which one would you pick. Both will bring you from A to B.

Because it's faceless people on an internet forum Sir. If person A has an adverse opinion (and expresses it) of a firearm that person B owns, person B takes said opinion like a knife to the heart and flips out.
I don't mine the Axis. I have one in .223. It's an accurate, cheap, disposable bolt action. Take it for what it is and you can't go wrong.
If it breaks, I'll literally strip it and sell it it for parts. Or just take a band saw to the receiver lol
$180 off the EE shipped to my door! I tapped it for a set of tech sights as well. She is a fun little plinking gun.
