Why does everyone give the axis a hard time?

Some people don't like them but for people who love guns that are on a tight budget I think there great. I own 2 of them and neither of them have every let me down, you can ask the deer and moose that are in my freezer :D I mean yeah compared to the higher price guns they are not even close but for someone like me hey i would buy them all day long.
 
I bought a camo xp axis just to use as a varmint gun. It spends a lot of time in the truck and even hanging in an old shed by the cattle pen and is subjected to rather nasty conditions. Does not get treated well, but surprisingly enough it seems to stand up well and always works when the need arises. I really can't knock it so far.
I definitely would not subject my better rifles to the type of use/maintenance that the axis has to tolerate.
 
Have had my Axis .308 for about a year, several hundred rounds. Good accuracy, no problems to report.

Thinking about getting one in .243 just to have something that shoots .243. IMHO they can kind of fill the same purpose as a handi rifle, if you just want a backup gun in a certain caliber.

The retail on an Axis II is $570 Canadian, So, with tax, it IS a $600 gun ;) all the reviews on Cabellas are very good +, most all other sites & you tube all have decent things to say. Meh.. I like it..I think I'l go shoot it todayy!

So now it's a $900 gun with a Boyds stock....that just makes me want to go hug my $500 Howa's and Vanguards. Twice the guns for half the price!
I like reading the Cabellas reviews for a good laugh....lots of fail there like these gems:
Great Rifle But NOT Bore Sighted As Advertised!
I purchased this rifle for deer and moose hunting. I chose the Savage over the Remmington because of the reviews on this site. Overall, it is a good rifle and I'm happy with it. Once I sighted it in properly, I easily achieved repeatable shots at 100 yards. The quality is also very good for this price point. The only concern I have which is why I only gave it 3 stars is that the scope was not even close to being bore sighted as claimed by Savage. It literally was missing a 5' wide target. I had to get extremely close to figure out what was happening - while wasting expensive bullets of course. I then had to apply extreme horizontal adjustments to zero it. It was shooting more than 5' to the right! Good thing I didn't trust it out of the box to go hunting; I would have been the laughing stock of my hunting group!

Who would even consider going hunting with a rifle you took out of the box that you never even fired once? Jesus....lol
.Its super light and for people who are like me with back problems and past back surgeries this gun is great to be carrying out to your favorite hunting location. If you are on a tighter budget and or have back and medical issues this gun is for you make sure when your browsing over guns take a good look at this one it will never let you down

Cheap Stock & Clip
Thought I got a deal, the clip jams if your not real careful and the stock broke at the front 2nd day Moose hunting, lucky for Ductape. I wasn't even treating it rough, so much for composite stock being tough more like cheap plastic. Don't buy!!!! spend a couple of extra bucks for a quality gun you'll be happy you did.

Why do you believe this? If the gun can shoot and you wish to invest money to improve or make it more comfortable to use what harm is there in adding improvements? Yes you may never get your money back out of it but some people own guns to use with never any intent to resell.

What's wrong with buying something better from the beginning?
Something with a decent stock, decent mags, smooth bolt, lighter smoother trigger, nicer metal finish, that shoots even better?

Maybe I should have said mostly stock.. why invest so much money in something your not really happy with is my point
 
I have a savage axis in 243. Hands down one of the most accurate rifles I have. I did add a Boyds stock and a Timney trigger. Why would I pay for a high end rifle if I plan on shooting it a lot? Don't get me wrong, I do have a couple of safe queens and do like high end rifles. However the barrels burn up just as fast as my savage if I would shoot them a lot without any added accuracy.
 
^ how many barrels have you burnt out so badly they no longer had hunting accuracy?

So far the axis:

- lasts up to an amazing 5 years!
- Shoots acceptable groups for a bolt from a bench!
- Can digest 100's of rounds!
- Is the perfect backup rifle, as long as you have 2 of them.

I have bought A LOT of rifles... never bought one that had accuracy issues that couldn't be cared for by careful loading and simple adjustments... I have sold hundreds of rifles... and only two that had accuracy issues, which I clearly related to the buyers and sold at a reduced price. Most guns are sold because people want to play with something new, not because there is a problem.

IMO, you have a greater likelyhood of landimg a lemon new from the factory than you are buying used. JME.
 
^ every brand new gun with the exception of one I've purchased has been a lemon out of the box. sXs that had no rib between the barrels and lost the weld covering the holes was the worst hit. Every used gun I have bought has worked flawlessly.
 
I personally think they should have never made the axis and stuck with the Stevens 200..... At least the Stevens wasn't so fugly....

Further to the title of this thread, what's with everyone accusing us that don't like the axis of being a "snob"?........ Life is expensive these days.... I cut corners where I can.... But I won't if it lessens my experience.... Or if I feel the cost of poor quality may come back to bite me in the ass.....
 
^ I hunt in flannel, and use 4x chinese binoculars.

I drive a 1998 honda CRV. Hunting, ice fishing, w.e. 40 bucks a tank of gas.

Lots of guys in Dodge Rams and Ford f-150's wearing full camo in their heated seats, decked out with laser rangefinders and massive binos; cradling their savage axis with the magazine next to a cup of tim hortons.

You can spend your money on whatever you want for hunting; but a firearm or bow is a need; and you shouldn't cheap out when there are so many other possible expenses.

What's fun in your statement is that it is absolutely true, but some people see the rifle just like you see the rest of the gear, like a tool. Not like an extention of themselves or something they will pass on to the next generation.

The axis is damn ugly and it does have a cheap stock, but it shoots and it shoots damn accurate, especially for a rifle of that price.

There's a market and a need for them as some people do hunt, but they do in a stand and only shoot 3-5 shots a year. So why would they need more than that.

But to me, it's still 1 more hunter out there, and it's a good thing. Makes less people that hate on hunting, less vegetarians and more money for the outdoor/hunting/gun industry.


Plus it always amaze me why so many people spend so much time hating on everyone elses choices, whatever the other guy shoots, won't change a dime in my life at the end of the day...


EDIT: Still have to agree tho, when you can get a Weatherby for 500$ on special, there's no point getting one of those.
 
My rifle is still in the budget category, but you are correct.

You are also correct about the other options like the vanguard. I shot a ruger american a fair bit but I do not like its low comb.
