What do you use them for. I want to come and do a match but I don't know exactly what I need and what it's all for. Thanks in advance for your help.

What match? CQB? You don't NEED a vest, just a way to carry 5 rifle mags (okay, carry 4- you load one at the start of the match) and 2 pistol mags (same applies) and have reasonably easy access.

The vest works well for most but I ran my first match with a shotshell pouch to carry rifle mags and belt mounted pistol mag holder.

Put together your best guess based on what you have and come out and try it. Your gear will evolve with you and nobody will look at you funny one way or the other.

If you like the event, you can get more/better gear later and get ideas from other shooters there.

Because I'm a mirror Kommando!

No seriously, because we CAN! Or if you are a retro guy like Rifledude, he's got the post-Vietnam ALICE LBE(load bearing equipment) look and he rocks!

Now if you are talking about CFSAC matches 1-4, then you have to wear a vest/chestrig because with yer 5/30 (or 5/20 rd) magazines, life may get a bit hectic for you on the rundowns. And yes we do have rundowns.... PILES of them because we don't stop at the 200m mound like in the older (M 1 to M16) matches... we continue the rundown to the 100m in all of the rundown serials. I'm in pain thinking about that already. :D

Cheers mates!

its a matter of preference. I have run tac rifle matches with belt pouches and I prefer the vest.....

For the CQB I used a MOLLE belt I got from London Bridge, with suspenders. It had 2 M14 double mag pouches on the left side (4 mags), water bottle on the back right. Worked quite well. I wondered how many in vests were on the hot side that day.

For the service, that's different, you need to carry a LOT more mags. That was a brutal day for me. Fun though, worth every erg of pain afterwards.

Probably partly because there are no high cap mags allowed for normal Canadians....which means we need to carry 4-5 mags, and that gets hard to do with just a belt pouch

You don't have to wear a vest. I don't. I put some thought into my rig and it is simple, cheap and efficient. All you really need is a pistol holster and some kind of bag to hold 4 rifle mags. In fact, for my very first match all I had was the pistol holster. I just tucked all the mags into my waist band. It worked. Good thing we don't run very far.

I am right handed. Pistol holster on right side of my belt. On left side is the pistol mag holster, so I can grab pistol mag with left hand and load.

Front center is a 4 mag pouch. The 4 mags loaded with 5 rounds go here. mags go in down, with bullet pointing to my right. The mags have a dot painted on the bottom to tell me which way they are pointed. The 5th mag, loaded with 4 rounds, goes in my back right pocket. This is for the start of another match, and is not required in a hurry.

At the start of the match, I draw a rifle mag from the right side of the pouch, since that one is the most awkward to reach. After the first 4 shots, I reload with the second mag on the right. Lots of time for that reload, so I use the second most awkward mag to reach.

I have doubled my rifle mags, to reduce the need to go to the pouch so often. This speeded things up. Speed is important in the transitions so that I have enough time to get all my pistol shots off.

To double my rifle mags all I needed was a block of wood, some glue and some tape. My kit cost about $45 for two pistol mags and $25 for the rifle mag pouch.

I bought a vest, but when practicing reloads I found the fact that I had to reach to a different place for each rifle mag made me slower. I am old and don't learn new motor skills easily.

Here is my kit. Probably the minimum, unless you just use pockets.

And what Ganderite didn't mention is that he kicked the ass of all of us mirror komandos at the last match. Your gear won't get you points, putting rounds in the middle of the target will, so what ever you find that works is the right gear.

Oh, and as for the 5 round mag limit, if we could use 30 rounders would the organisers would just increase the rounds per stage so we still had to do all the changes. That would cost a ton of $$$$ for each match and make scoring a #####. Live with 5-5/30 and be happy. The mag changes are part of challenge of the match and really easy and cheap to practice at home. A little time and they become automatic.

Yes. But it has problems. The stripper clip loads quickly, but you have to run the gun dry to be able to re-load.

With an AR, you drop the mag after 4 shots, and load a new mag, giving 6 in the gun.

I have used the SKS, but soon swithed to a M4gery.

Matter of preference. I like the weight of what I'm carrying distributed on my shoulders and not on my hips. I like where it puts my mags and such for easy changes, I like that I can carry my camel back on me, stuff like that.

When I show up for CQB the only thing I carry outside of what I'm wearing on me, and my rifle, is a box of ammo. After all, aren't we supposed to be emulating what the boys have to do in real life?
:D

PS, the vest is ultimately configurable for many different games.

I already carry so much weight on my hips that an extra 10 pounds is hardly noticable.

But I can see that for you skinny guys, a vest might be more comfortable. The bottom line is that although you don't NEED a vest, it might be the most handy, the most comfortable or the fastest foy YOU. And YOU are the only one that matters.

I tried a cheap vest and did not care for it. It seemed to be size medium. I am not.
