Why does my 44mag Ruger Carbine jam!!

Question when jammed does it hand cycle, pull and eject spent cartridge? If so I'd try reversing the gas piston and check for a scuff edge, the pressure may be canting the piston and it is allowing gasses to escape and it wedges itself, when the gasses dissapate the action frees up.

I had a gunsmith look at it and he tells me the piston is fine almost new, but it's not tapered and he didn't know if this would be the cause the problem and that as far as he went with it. If he doesn't know how to fix it he won't.

I told ya how to fix it....

Perhaps I was wrong about the tapered piston, its been a while since I sold mine. I do remember that if the gun was not assembled in a certain way it would not cycle. You could tilt the gun forward and down and you would hear a click as the piston moved forward, if it was installed backwards then you would not hear the click, thats all I remember.

Tapered piston....??????

I know the problem. Now if I can just find the name of the gunsmith in Sask., I believe, who repaired mine and four others with the same problem. Be patient.....tapered piston...really!

The gunsmith at the Ruger repair depot in western Canada has passed away. I called Ruger in New Hampshire to ask about repairs and they advised that the new Canadian depot is in Quebec...phone 450-427-0052. I called there and got an answering machine. The Ruger person I spoke to advised me that they no longer make or stock parts for these rifles so if the Quebec Depot doesn't have parts you are out of luck. The problem I encountered was with a cracked casting which houses the trigger assembly. It is evident if that is the problem when the firearm is disassembled and inspected. Rugers advise...the Company line as it were, is this.....either take it to a private gunsmith to attempt repairs or send it to them and they will replace it with a new rifle. Now...before you send it in to them ...I asked which new rifle and they advised the Model 96 lever action in 44 magnum as they are no longer making the newer semi-auto either. So if you want to part with your rifle you can get a new one....now, try doing it from good old Canada!!! I doubt the casting can be repaired but....who knows? Buying a second rifle for parts would be cost prohibitive in my opinion. If this news gets out maybe the price of used rifles will come down. Hope this helps....Dave

Ruger doesn't make any more parts for the carbine, but I talked to someone at Ruger and was told that if I send it to a Ruger rep, they would replace it with a new 96/44, it's the the semi I wanted but it would be alot better than what I have now. Thanks for all the help
