I picked this gem up on the EE for a good price and i just cant get over no one seems interested in the old 1911s anymore. you get 50 threads on what 1911 should i buy but they all want cookie cutter guns you can buy out of a catalog.
after i got this gun in the mail and checked it out. this is what i found.
its a Caspian long slide on the older 'safari arms' style finger groove frame.6" storm lake ramped barrel. pinned back grip safety, Pachmayr flat mainspring housing.two piece guide rod assy that has been relief cut and has the Aristocrat sight. the trigger pull brakes clean as is the lightest i have ever felt maybe 2lbs.
the only thing i am going to change is the grips.

i just wish more guys were into the old 1911 race guns. you can still find gems like this. why buy something anyone can get and spend a ton of money.

what do you guys think?

I think a 1911 of yesterday is much like the ar15 today.

Everyone and there dog was building up custom guns and it may be a real gem or it could be a real dog....and you won't know until you get it and shoot it.

Thats true. its good advice not to buy a gun if you don't know what you are looking at.
i just think even if you find a 'dog' with youtube and how easy it is to get parts now you could fix your gun if it had a problem.

A 1911 is a 1911. A quality one will beat the cheaply made one easily. Made in 1911 or 2011. The 1911 is a well designed handgun, technology advances can change how the tolerances are.
'Retro' gets over looked because of how fancy they are now.
If I can hit 5/10 touching a bullseye, new or old I would by it.
Retro is a bad label. Amazing guns can get passed over.
To the OP, Nice purchase!

There will always we room in my safe for a couple of 1911s. But they'd be basically stock 5 inch or Commander length slides, with what I would deem are my essential mods, like a beavertail and ring hammer, Noval or Bomar style rear sights, long trigger, perhaps FO front sights and flat MSH.

Not into race guns myself.

Plus to echo above - I don't know what I'm getting into. It could be a gem, or be clapped out with a cracked and welded frame and as unreliable as one always hears horror stories of.

Besides, to me "retro" means 1911A1 and National Match pattern guns - those are beautiful in their austere purpose, and all that I really want in a 1911.

But that doesn't mean that I'm going to pay bucks for a old series 70 colt with unknown internals, overshadowed by the poor reputation that guns of that era have

Love the 1911, old, new, doesn't matter, feels good in the hand and fits my hand perfectly, points great ,and accurate enough for my old eyes! With all the aftermarket gear out there, the 1911 can be modified to fit most people and their modification desires!
