Why doesn't Ruger make the Alaskan in some more all around rounds like 30-06, 300wm, 338wm, 308win, etc... ? I love the rifle but I don't need the 375ruger to kill deer and moose in Alberta. Nice round but just not what I need.

I think the Alaskan is supposed to be marketed as a grizzly defence/hunting gun. The more power, the better. Though, I must admit, the Alaskan in 30-06 would be nice.

Alaskan is a stainless hawkeye with a short barrel...Buy one in whatever cal you want and have it cut down...Or just buy the Stainless Ultralight, it already has a 20" barrel...

No, but any Alaskan I have seen has a scope on it. I wouldn't worry too much about having back-up sights on a deer gun. I take 2 to camp anyway...If that is an issue, have sights put on it...Would be cheaper than an Alaskan...

I'm after the open sights... I've talked to a couple of smiths about having sights added to my other M77's but they seem a bit sketchy about it. Anyone know a good smith for doing this?

Ruger does offer a smaller version of the Alaskan, sort of, chambered for the 300RCM and 338RCM. Open sights similar to the ones on the Alaskan models too. From what I've heard the 300RCM is basically just a 30-06+P....

I have been down that road as well sadly. I'd like something new, but with good irons. I keep going back to enfields, mosins, mausers, and m-14s.

Yes.

Your current options for new big-game bolt action rifles with open sights include the Remington 700 BDL or Model 7 CDL (but only in 350 Remington Magnum), the Ruger Hawkeyes in RCM chamberings or the Alaskan/African models, the M77 International or #1A rifles, some of Savage's Classic series, and some CZ models. At least those are all I can think of.

You could get a NECG Masterpiece banded front sight and have it installed easily. Then get their fancy receiver sight that attached to the scope dovetail and you'd be set. I've got a Masterpiece on my 9.3x62 and it's a great sight with the bonus of interchangeable blades/beads.

Exactly. As good as the 375 Ruger is, if they chambered for the 300 and 338 Win mags, each 300 and 338 they sold would be one less 375 Ruger.

They are commited to the cartridge, and considering how quickly the 480 Ruger died, they are treading carefully.
