Why don't IPSC shooters like 3-gun?

At my club, I notice that the majority of pistol shooters don't show up for 3 gun matches. I've asked a few people and I've been told they don't like shooting shotguns or they prefer to concentrate on their pistol skills. Fair enough....but I'm not sure I fully buy into either of those answers! What's the deal?

Me personally, I'm new to IPSC so that's the priority at the moment. On the other hand I don't see much in the way of 3gun matches so not sure if that is going to be an option in the future.

Simple minds, simple pleasures....

Practical shotgun is a complex sport, if you really get into it.
Plus the recoil is often more than what people want to deal with.

I shoot IPSC and and quite enjoy 3gun. The ones who hate it must be the same IPSC members who wear Soloman Speedcrosses to indoor ranges.

I can only speak for myself. With work and family life I only get 1, sometimes 2, free weekends a month. Here in Nova Scotia, matches are on Sundays so its a matter of only having so much time to go around and pistol only matches are way more fun for me. I've heard it said some people find three gun expensive, especially if you want to be more competitive as your skills improve.

People are free to decide to do what they enjoy most.
Different people enjoy doing different things...

'Might as well ask "Why don't IPSC shooters like curling?"

'Just my guess.

Why would you not accept someone's answer about themselves? What's the deal?

I have an AR-15 and 2500 rounds of ammo, but I haven't shot it in a long time. I'm focusing on my pistol skills because I have a personal goal I want to achieve. You can believe me or not. :)

3-gun does look like fun. Just not for me at this time.

Oh come on now. They are both action shooting sports with similar formats...probably at the same range with a lot of the same people. Yes of course people can enjoy different things. I'm asking to find out specifically what they don't like about 3 gun, or why they don't want to try it in the first place.

I've only shot IPSC, but I'd like to try 3 gun too. I haven't though, because I don't have a suitable shotgun and rifle. I could probably get by with an sks and stripper clips for a try, but my only shotgun is a 100+ year old double barrel hunting gun. I don't think that would work very well.

It's a lot more expensive to practice properly for 3 gun, I'd rather practice with my pistol than a rifle or shotgun and the stages are too long. I've tried 3 gun and I don't get the same feel out of a stage that I do in IPSC; it's less focused than I prefer.

Interesting perspective, thanks for that. If the stages were just one gun per stage do you think that would make it more appealing for you? Are 2-gun rifle/pistol matches more appealing?

I am not into either one. Edmonton basically has no shooting competitions.

Before everyone looses it on me, I realize there is that one or two competitions in Edson. But its 2 hours away and only does long range shooting which basically means who ever spends the most wins.

1) Cost prohibitive
2) Matches are so long
3) Safety - One stage I watched 3 people for the same stage without getting DQ'ed, one of them broke 90 degrees when his shotgun hit the wall, and the next two guys were reloading with fingers on triggers.

Overall I want to try it, but the combination of all three has put it on the backburner for me. Also the fact that my IPSC shooting has really grown this year and I am spending all my energy into improving myself as an IPSC competitor. Once I become stagnent in that, I think I will have a much larger drive to try three gun.
