Why don't you compete?

I still have the shot indicator that I shot the spindle out of in the X at 1000yds in Sacremento. :D

Small things like that make a trip to a match worthwhile.......even if you place 40 somethingth. LOL

Just to feel like I'm good enough to be on the firing line would put a big smile on my face.

For those who have served when the main round packed by a Canadian soldier was 7.62 X 51, remember the guy with the sore cheek and shoulder at the end of a day on the range. That was me, most guys, 2-300 rounds in a day as I recall, me, 7-800. I couldn't group to save my life. I can now, thanks to pistols of all things...

The sore cheek and shoulder was more to do with the configuration of the stock than the recoil. The stocks needed to be XL for comfort when shooting, something the QM didn't understand. Of course the ammo was also 3 MOA ammo. I have seen plenty of 100 lbs girl cadets shooting .308 all day long and not even bat an eye at recoil.

:D Yes sir! I happen to pref a short stock too. I had my own FAL for a bit in the late 80's. The stock was more comfortable to shoot than the C1. Now I do most of my shooting with .223, much nicer to shoot

To 'some' of the guys talking Ontario matches , flip the map over and you'll find the big half of Ontario on the other side . 16 hours to Toronto for me going east and 8 hours to Winnipeg . $600.00 in gas just to get to Toronto and back .

Now there is a DCRA/ORA ? club here that used to shoot on the DND range and now shoots on a 300 yard range 30 miles west . Myself and 3 friends were invited out , hmmm ... 20 years ago . We've been shooting long range in the forest cuts for a very long time . We were told to dress appropriately if we ever wanted to come out a second time . I still haven't bought those Kahki pants , a fly fishing vest with a built in shoulder pad nor a Tilly hat and i never will . Now the 4 of us all have sons that shoot with us , for a total of 9 that could have bumped that clubs membership by 9 but our sons aren't interested in Tilly hats either . A boonie hat and a camo jacket is fine with us .

atr, where is this club? There is talk about getting Burwash up and running as a club, but so far just talk. By the sounds of it you are closer to T-Bay?
The DCRA/ORA does not have a dress code although appropriate dress is encouraged ie, we just don't want/need to see your wedding tackle hanging out of your short when you are in a shooting position.

If there are people in remote areas of Ontario that live near a DND range, that would be interested in forming a club, contact the ORA.

I had no idea Tilley hats were part of a dress code. What part of Ontario you from? If anything there's more French that way and I know they don't give a flying F about what hat you wear.
Are they paying you to dress properly? :pirate:

I think it can be the bad attitude of some individuals in charge at a certain range . He has a way of making people not feel too welcome to come back .
As a newcomer to shooting that almost turned me off to only attending local shoots .

well, i haven't built a competition worthy precision rifle to begin with. but I don't compete in anything anyways. competitions just don't do it for me. i like to be the best i can, but i compete against myself. i could have the worst time in a heat, but if it had beaten my previous best, i'd be fine with that.

i prefer going to courses and training sessions where they teach you how to become better. i find that competition takes away from my focus and i don't actually learn or refine myself as best as i can. the things i'm good at in life are things i've practiced and learned on my own time, usually by myself and in the occasional instance, have done a course or two in.

So you bring up a 20 year, 2 generation grudge against the ORA/DCRA predicated on an alleged dress code, and your choice of domicile; and you don't even know if it was the ORA/DCRA. That's a real good reason not to compete:rolleyes: None of the current members are aware of what you describe.

Anyway a lot can, and has changed in 20 years, which you 9 could have found out, if you cared to.

I would gladly run Burwash if I was a little closer Any Sudbury shooters willing to step up?

I wonder if I could carry all my gear on my bike? lol

This is a bang on quote that covers all hobbys and all levels of competition. I started to compete a few years ago and was lucky enough to fall in with the right crowd who dont tolerate primadonas

I think I may know the gentleman in which you speak of. Trust me he is really a pussy cat, once you get to know him. Once he has given his range safety briefing there will be no doubt in anyone's mind about who is in charge of the range.
Keep in mind that Sr. NCO's or former Sr. NCO's are not known for their tact. They are however known for getting the job done right. Safety is paramount and in the best interest of non-military users continued use of DND ranges.

Thunder Bay and it was ORA which i've heard that now is some north western ontario rifle association or maybe a manitoba affiliate . At the time they were also affiliated with the DCRA . Agreed , some things can change in 20 years but it's still the same folks here with a hugely declining membership . Fudds is a perfect definition . We were invited out by a really friendly guy we met in the bush , so we went . Those were the days they shot on the 600 yard DND range which is no longer there . It was 2 club execuitive members along with 2 other members that approached us to tell us that we were not appropriately dressed and to be appropriately dressed should we want to come out a second time . The other complaint was our rigs . Back then i had a Steyr SSG with a Shepard scope on it in a drag bag . We were told that this was a competition club , not a sniper club and our rifles weren't suitable unless we got rid of the scopes and put micrometer sights on . I have no idea if they still shoot like that but the same guys are in charge . The same guys that fought IPSC and didn't want it shot on our ranges because of public preception . The ranges belong to the Fish and Game and 8 clubs rent evenings or afternoons from them . The 300 yard range west of town where these guys shoot rifle is a private range although these guys , their club rents time at the Fish and Game to shoot handguns , bullseye match only . A few years ago a few of them were on a 50 yard Fish and Game range shooting handguns preparing for a bullseye 1800 match . Myself and a buddy were on the 100 yard range shooting AR's . In came the law , two cars , 4 cops . One of those guys called 911 to report two guys shooting "Stenguns" or some type of illegal machineguns on the range . I knew one of the cops , who is a gun guy and he told us what the call was all about . The law was there for about 3 minutes . I've been a Fish and Game and a member of my handgun club since 1977 and served as President for 10 years . It's you that doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to my neck of the woods . Are they ORA/DCRA now , i don't know but they were . Like previously stated i heard that they either joined a Manitoba Rifle Association or formed something called the North Western Ontario Rifle Association .
