A brand new Remington 700 stainless steel action:$400. A used/take off CM could be easily found cheaper by the patient and resourceful.
True action: $150.
Total spent: $550 +tax.
Not anywhere close to the price of a Pierce or any other custom available in Canada. It's actually half the price and proven over many many years to make an accurate rifle.
Are you importing the actions? Getting a NEW stainless action at $400 very interesting, Please do tell. PMs are welcomed.![]()
There are so many upgrades to a custom action that a Rem 700 doesn't have depending on what brand you chose. Better lock times, better materials, fluted bolts, truer dimensions, one piece bolts, larger bolt handles, swept bolt handles, custom tang options, the list goes on. Can't get that from Rem 700, even if you can just purchase a straight action.
Most charge $150 to true.
I agree a Rem 700 can be made more expensive than a custom. However if a person simply wants an accurate rifle/receiver, fancy bolt release, knobs, fluting, etc are not necessary.
Agreed!! Not really sure where you can buy an action only from Remington. I know you can get a Savage target action only for about $550, another reason to use a Savage. Even comes with a very nice trigger. Another thing the Remington lacks without a gunsmith to tune. As I said before, the 700 DESIGN, is great and I love my Pierce. That's why I had my full custom built on a Rem clone not a Savage target action. But for a semi-custom, I sold my Savage instead of rebarrelling it and had Northshore build me a full on custom with a Pierce. Very happy. In the end, both are capable of produce excellent accuracy. I'm not a gunsmith so maybe I am wrong, but I don't really think the actions contribute as much to accuracy as a good barrel and a great chambering job. I still really like the Savage for the economics and flexibility in a semi-custom. If you are looking for a straight custom, go all out and get a custom action that was built with exacting tolerances from the beginning, not something you have to fix and replace the trigger then sell the barrel and stock. So you prefer a bolt that has been soldered together over a threaded one?You don't enjoy headspacing a savage over trying to do the same on a rem?
Guess you like that your action starts out as a piece of pipe too then.
There sure are some weird posts and prices on here...
I am not knocking anyone's choice for buying a custom action, it's their money, their decision. But lets get some facts straight about 700's.
The 700 - utmost is the fact it is the strongest, safest 2 lug bolt action that has ever been made. It also happens to be an extremely inherently accurate action as well. Very simple to work on if you know what you are doing. I doubt there is any other action that has as much aftermarket accessories for. I have no doubt a 'cheap' trued 700 with a quality barrel install will shoot right along with or better than some customs costing 2 or 3 times as much. It just isn't worth as much or have the prestige that some customs have.

Yes, I would like to know too. So far, the best way I know of to get a 700 action is to buy the full rifle. For example, the 6.5 mm I had built....I bought the cheapest 700 SA SS rifle I could find.....which turned out to be a 7mm-08.
