In response to the newly arrived Marstar guns thread and Re: Hungry's comment..."Okay, this is getting annoying. Let's get some of you experienced Norc M14 owners who have been to my clinics.... step up and tell these newbies that their rifles are fine after a good TLC cleaning bout!"

I have to tell a short tale! I was born in 1955 (10 years post WW2) and my Dad hand carved two exact Garand M1 shaped guns out of wood with electrical tubing barrels for my brother and I! We had the "coolest guns" in our neighbourhood gang playing war in the local forest. I loved that "gun shape" and never owned a gun my whole life until recently when I got my PAL and bought a Norc M14! I've always hated the look of shiny new rifles and I loved the fact that my Norc was cosmo'd, smelled old, and came from a damp and dingy storage place. It added to the nostalgia!

Now, 2 years later, I'm still loving that gun! LOL Why are they so fun you ask?

1. They're economical and still available as a non-restricted semi-auto Cool!
2. They're easy to pull apart and rugged enough to withstand newbie abuse!
3. They're easy to understand and clinics are available to help you learn more!
4. The enthusiasts you meet as other owners are cool!...and helpful!
5. This website gives you something to look at daily that's interesting!
6. You can start with a basic gun and build it up to whatever you want!
7. They're fun, loud and powerful and can be target or hunting guns!
8. Everyone you show it to wants to hold it and know all about it!

I started out simple...bought the gun and cleaned it up...shot it a bunch of times and LOVED it! Slowly I bought a Walnut stock, a new op rod guide and spring, a USGI Bayo lug flash hider...every month another "little something"...and the sky's the limit!

So to finish, You could give me one in a tub of cosmo and mould and I'd still love it! Because once you own one...You'll buy another! I know because I DID!

me too...... and that "sky's the limit thing" it called the "Addiction Affliction" and it leads to building things like this that cost WAY too much money hehehehe but gawd damn it's fun. :D

Got one from a buddy for $250 with one box of ammo through it. Traded for a shotgun due to ammo costs.
Just could not afford $200 trips to the range as a student.

Cant wait to start working and buy another one :D

Yep, I got mine in a trade, so it was 'pre-loved'. It came wearing a scope and had a fiberglass USGI stock. Everything was painted a light OD green. Scope came off after first few plinking sessions (and wound up on my 25-06) and I drilled out the peep site in an effort to center the hole and get more of a ghost ring effect. Legal 10 rnd mags are/were available for a bolt action gun that fit it.
It still chokes on the old blue box surplus I've had arround for 15 years, but seems to work OK with factory rounds. I just bought a set of dies and plan to reload. Its a simple gun and most stuff is well discussed here, so I can work on it myself.
Pretty sure this one's a keeper.

Hungry's clinics are the road to knowledge. The other road detours around the internet and goes straight to the range. At $400 for the rifle a guy can buy $1000 worth of ammo and still be a better shooter than the fellow who still has to find more money to get a Springfield from a dealer.
(attended Minden clinic '07, and gave Prescot clinic '07)

RZmitch: You nailed it. Yeah, I've switched all my competition and training to the AR platform, but my Norc M14 that many of you handled at the Barrie Clinic is still my zombie, SHTF, or 'go to' gun. Now those of you who get intimidated by all the rage with black rifles and their high zoot parts (read: unobtanium), remember that their chopped down door kicker M4 carbine will never have the knock down that a chopmod / sopmod M14 will bring, especially when your campsite is over run buy bears! :nest: ha ha ha

And frankly, for the CGNutters on a budget (read: students, single parents, young kids), this platform can keep you in the game like it did for me when my boys were in diapers 18 years ago, and now that they are in Univ/college, I'm finding myself going back down that road (tight budgets) again. :D

Peace be to journey
Barney

and to further what Hungry has stated....... yer AR has some restrictions ...... like you can only take it to a range..... and you have to have ATT's and all that crap.... The m14...... none of the above applies.... regardless of how "evil" you make it look.
it's just a no brainer in my books.

It's posts like this that really make me want a M14!

I'm currently looking into a brand new Norinco M14S and a USGI synthetic stock. What would the going price (IE what should I expect to pay) for one of these?

Hungry here: Head over to the EE Forum. You will find the M14's selling for around $ 400ish give or take. Then USGI glass stocks are around $ 150ish give or take.
