Why I love Wood Stocks

Thanks for all the kind comments. :) This is a truly outstanding piece of Walnut. I sort of agree that it should probably not be hunted with, but it shoots so well!! Actually it has accounted for 2 moose and a decent Black bear, but it will not be packed much unless I find a less gorgeous piece of lumber to put under it. Too much chance of messing it up...then the crying would begin!! :( Regards, Eagleye

Friggin made my heart miss a couple beats when I eyeballed that stock, Eagleye! Give us better warning next time fer ##### sakes! Absolutely fantastic looking wood. It would make an awesome family heirloom to pass down after one kicks the bucket :)

Once again, a very nice piece of wood but don't shy away from using it. It shouldn't be only admired but also appreciated and used (carefully) with pride for full enjoyment. Go for it.

Use it. IMO any gun that is too "pretty" to use, is a useless gun. Why hang a nice gun in a great cal on the wall?

I think that a rifle with exceptional wood like that should be hunted with. The marks the stock will get from honest use adds to it's character, and often good wood stocks are very stable. A rifle that is left in a display case is never loved.

On the other hand I had a beautiful Whitworth Express rifle in .458 that really hurt me to pack through the rocks , so it swapped it for my 602.

Just looking at the beautiful wood stock has kinda got me thinking i may have to go to wood for my next gun (instead of the usual synthetic and wood laminate).

Well ya know, a stock with all that tiger in it is going to squirm all over the place when you take it out in the cold and wet. So Ill give you $50 for that stock and get you a good plastic one to replace it and solve all your troubles.
Ooohhh-now cleanup in aisle 6.... How the custom shop missed that is hard to imagine unless the original owner (if it was not you) worked for the company and bought it for himself. Yeah, I could see that for sure.

Although I own a few synthetic stocked rifles [not many], I have to admit a weakness for a nice warm Walnut stock on a blued rifle. Once in awhile, one shows up that is exceptional. Case in point is the stock on my 8x57 Classic. Remington missed the boat when they didn't grab this for a custom shop rifle, but guess that is my gain. I have several rifles with nice figure, but this one stands out. Here's a couple of pics. Enjoy!!! Regards, Eagleye

Beauty!!
I cant stand plastic on a gun, just looks cheap and toyish to my eye.

What you have there is a looker for shure, now you need a nice flintlock with that kind of wood on it !!

Cheers!

I'm no expert, but if I suspect the stock has been refinished over a hot string process.

I have a Browning 71 that looks just like it and was told the stock had been treated to an old gunsmithing technique "hot stringing"....Perhaps yours is the real deal...So no offense if it is.

Nice looking stock!

Nice looking stock!

It's the real deal! It has been refinished in oil, but no fancy techniques involved, just a good rubbed oil finish to bring out the natural figure in the wood. As soon as I had this one in my hands, even with the original finish, I knew I had a beauty. Regards, Eagleye

I have a suggestion for you to make it into a usable hunting rifle....coat it with bedliner. ..... :D

just kiddin' of course;)....that is a beauty.
