Why is AR-15 so costly?

I'm sure they did, but it's a far cry from 'numerous' to the '30% of all casualties' quoted above (roughly 18000 US Soldiers killed as a direct result of the M16 jamming? cmon...)

I am just stating the cause, not how many have died directly from it.
 
time to wade in and show just how little i know- it was the CALCIUM CARBONATE in the powder that was used as a preservative that caused the bolts to weld themselves shut in the m16- that and too tight a chamber tolerance - a savvy armourer or gunny would take a piece of crocus cloth, wind it around a cleaning rod, chuck the thing in a drill and polish the heck out of the chamber- they didn't fail after that- either that or the casing would fail due to the higher pressure and extract the head of the case only, leaving the rest inside- this is all well documented over on the ar boards- think it's called "the truth about the m16 " or something like that- it's like over 4 pages long and extremely well written by a guy that was heavily involved on the technical side
back in 1990, colt was offering a "special" - you know how they were for boxed "specials"
ar15a2( std barrel) sporter with a2 sights-even though the manual said that these only came on the h-bar,bayonet( m7) 2 -5/20 magazines, and a scope mount - the dealer added an armscorp 3x9x32 and rings ( they also included that piece of nylon strapping they called a sling) for 1100 canadian- i still have the receipt and the gun
 
FS - not hostile - just trying to stay away from the hi-jack that comes with the involved powder choices based upon port pressure, rates of fire and velocity - and economy...
 
Well all I know is what your don't spend on the rifle you will spend on ammo. The AR is the Barbie doll of semi auto's, she has a dress and outfit for every occasion. :wink:

I don't know but I bet KevinB has or had every outfit at one time AND the Barbie Jeep and RV too. :D :wink:

For me anyway, if it's not accurate, it's not fun. I'd rather pay $1200 for an AR that will shoot MOA than $600 for a ####ing mini14 that could't hit an elephant if it was lodged up it's ass........ :wink:
 
My Pre-ban AR-15 copy made by Essential Arms (EA) later to be bought out by DPMS cost me $650 in used condition. I bought it before the stupid so-called Assault Weapons Ban when prices were starting to rise. Prices remain high because of demand. Everyone was waiting for the ban to expire here in the states so they could again buy the rifles with all the "evil features". It will take a while for the manufacturers to catch up to demand. Also many of the parts suppliers also make mil spec parts for the military which also puts a demand on parts. Wait for demand to slow and the sale prices to start. We won't be rescinding the 300% Canadian export fee/tax though :) .


By the way I won't be selling mine for $200. So don't ask.

You can still build them for around $500 if you shop around for new parts. Less if you want to settle for used.
 
The norinco m-14 seems like a much better deal to me. I would never pay that much for a semi auto 223, but hey harley davidson is still selling motor cycles. :lol: I had an AR back in the 80's when you could hunt with them and it was pretty much useless in the bush. I'll stick to 7.62.
 
AR's dont retain much of there resale value, just look at the for sale section. Nobody wants to touch the expensive tricked out AR's.
 
Thats still expensive to buy the tricked out AR's but you get a hell of a deal!! People on this board are cheap.(I would be one of those!!!)
