Why is bear so underrated?

just my take but I’d rather hunt something that is a prey species and is instinctually wary and no I don’t hunt over “bait piles” And yes I hunt over or near crop fields but I’m not going to argue if that is deemed as baiting ….and yes I have eaten bear and yes it is tasty..I just have no desire to hunt for one.

Top predators?

Black bears are opportunistic omnivores, same as us. They take what they can get. They are not the fire-breathing, snaggle-toothed, tire-biting vicious bloodthirsty beasts that some big-game guides claim to their clients so that they'll feel like heroes for shooting one.

"it generally has little wariness of humans" Well I'd dispute that. I've always said the hardest thing about bear hunting is getting one to stop running away from you.

I think we have different experiences, but what do I know? I've only been hunting them since 1976.
 
Heck, birds can hardly stomach them. Cougars, coyote carcasses are the same. Oh sure some get eaten, but there is no comparison between an ungulate and a carnivore when it comes to a carcass being cleaned up.
 
I’ve eaten quite a few, all were great. All but a very large and rank boar that is. I’ve also had a mule deer and a moose that were large and hard to eat. I’ve never hunted over bait but find them wild and allusive.

Bear aren't carnivores, they're omnivores. And they can be cannibalistic, especially in the fall when they crave fat for the winter.

I have a friend that is a trapper. Should he eat the coyotes he traps? The beaver? Martins? Wolves? How about the cougar hunters? Do they all eat the meat? Brown bear hunters in Alaska? Grizzly hunters?

You need to step down from your high horse. Your understanding of hunting is as narrow.

I'll make two more points and then I'll leave it alone.

1 you came her ####ting all over this thread with your opinion of eating bear meat so maybe we both road in on high horses or perhaps both the pot?

2 you do you man, if it legal go for it. I'm just saying if you were at my bear camp and shot a bear and wasted the meat you would be promptly kicked out. That is all.

Oh and by the way. My wife of 23 years cooked a beef roast for the first time last Sunday. Almost weekly or multiple times a week she has cooked wild game for those 23 years.

So where are we drawing the line? Cougars? Wolves? Coyotes? Fox?

I’m not saying don’t eat them. I’m saying I’m not. I prefer to eat meat that doesn’t have worms crawling out of it.

I enjoy hunting all game animals regardless of the species and I like bear meat that being said my family consume may be less than 20 percent of all my harvest due to the fact that I have many friends and family members that don't hunt or not as good as hunter like most everyone in this thread (have a buddy been hunting whitetail with his father for 7 years and never have a taste of venison until last year when I took him out after I filled my tag and gave him the entire animal) and I am willing to share with them due to the fact years ago I remember an old timer told me which I still remember to this date:

Hunting is about get out there and enjoy ourselves in the outdoor and if we can fill our tag it's a blessing we should share our harvest with those unfortunate ones or those who don't hunt and will never able to taste wild game meat unless we offer and provide to them I still remember all the pics that buddy sent when they cook meals from the venison and will never forget the smile on his family's face.

So at the end of the day as long no game meat were spoiled or wasted and the hunt is legal that's what matters to me.
