It seems that the online dealers (including contributing dealer of CGN) require customers' birthday for "age verification", whatever that means.

I am not sure if giving out birthday information is necessary or safe thing to do for online shopping. Anyone has some insights about this? Thank you very much.

RadioShack is really not my type of store. I have purchased many firearms online. I never been asked for birthday. From my experience, only CFC asks birthday informaiton for identificaiton, not age verification.

I would be interested in the answer as well. I wouldn't give the information myself, I don't see how it would be relevant to the transaction.

Online shopping can be dangerous in that any personal information is open to being stolen. Identity theft is a big problem & getting worse all the time.

There is way too much information about all of us out there.

Proof of age. Most underage types, doing anything, will screw up the year of birth.

Depends what you're buying I guess. If it is a firearms related item that is age restricted, then yes. However, if it is a firearm itself or ammunition then your valid PAL information should be sufficient as this in itself shows proof of age.

In this day and age I think dealers are perhaps just a bit more paranoid about covering their respective arses (and quite honestly, in today's climate, it's hard to blame them). A government issued valid PAL should suffice though.

Are there many other items that are age restrictive that you DON'T have to possess a PAL to purchase? Knives I guess and possibly other survival gear?

I believe that firearms dealers ask for date of birth because they, in turn, will be asked for that info by the CFC when the dealer is initiating the transfer of non-restricted firearms - it is part of the "verification" procedure, enabling the dealer to get the transfer going without the CFC having to contact the buyer (that's how it used to be).

I purchased quite some firearms from dealer online (restricted or non-restricted, most of them sold already:(). I never been asked to provide birthday.

Usually, gun club, address, phone, and PAL# are more than sufficient for the ownership transfer.

You're exactly right. It is a province by province situation depending on what your CFO wants. Some provinces they only want a seller to confirm that the buyer has a valid PAL. In other provinces they require the seller to phone in and validate the buyers PAL and birthdate. I think it's just another way of making life harder on people trying to buy and sell because as we all know, they'd love it if we all gave up and handed them in.

they require it to run a check.

For non Restricted firearms it used to be

Name
PAL Number
Date of birth
Place of birth
Adress
Phone number

Then they would type the info into the online system and it would transfer the firearm to them.

For restricted firerams instead of date of birth its club. Then they started wanting both ie the CFO with out telling anyone it was a pain in the ass.

I just look at the PAL go yep looks like you yep not expired and yep can buy firearms then hand it over and say here you go... Online not sure how I would want to check it. Through Skype with a web camera or something would work or just sending the info and phoning it in.
