Why is it so hard to properly describe a scope?

Just a little thing that grinds my gears haha. Why is it that so many people describe the variable and the size of the objective lens of their scope as if they were giving the dimensions of a box? For example... it is 3-9x40 not 3x9x40 lol! :D Just my two cents...
 
haha nah, doesn't make me angry, just one of my pet peeves haha ---> Note the :D at the end of my first post, no fuse burning here friend.
 
I completely agree!

If some can get pissed about calling guns weapons, or AR's assault rifles, I can be pissed about idiots who don't understand basic principles of magnification!

It magnifies 3 x 9 x 40? So it has 1080 times magnification? Sheer genius I tell you!

Well the 9 isn't really a measurable dimension either,so 3-9x40 wouldn't really be correct either.:D It gives the impression that part of the scope is 9x40,but there is no 9 to measure.:p

Using your logic,with 3-9x40 you still have 9x40 which is 360.Still not correct.

we better write to all optics manufactures and tell them to quit printing it this way on all of their scopes and packing boxes! lol still makes a lot more sense than 3x4x9.

I find it more irritating when people think that 30-06 is a caliber,or when someone says they shoot a 7mm,and you are supposed to know which 7mm that they are talking about.
 
Just saw one on the EE "............or trade for 7mm brass.........." ,I believe it was.LMAO

Probably would have needed a hug if I asked what kind of 7mm :p

Ah, but you're forgetting your order of operations!

3-9x40 = 3-360 = -357

This particular scope clearly has NEGATIVE magnification, which I assume would make everything viewed through it invisible... Times three hundred and fifty seven.
 
You folks must have forgot about the post about some fellow who wanted to mount his scope backwards to simulate shooting at longer ranges.
