Why is it so tough to remove the damn flash hider!

I have gone through countless drill bits trying to drill though the weld spots on my Norc M-305 flash hider. I am making progress, but it seems I'm only heat treating the steel. I am going fairly slowly and taking breaks not to heat things up very much.

I want to replace the hider with a Smith muzzle brake I have. And pounding the flash hider with a chunk of wood or brass drift just sends chunks of wood flying.

YES, I have loosened off the castle nut. There is plenty of play there. I just can't seem to get the hider moving.

Any tips on how to get through the barrel more quickly?

Thanks.

An end mill in a drill press...........

Hitting with a hammer and using small steel plate up against the back of the site usually will do it without drilling anything but maybe the decided to do some hardcore welding on yours.

I cut along side my welds with a dremmel. The majority of the FS will come off then you can pry the last bit off with a screwdriver.

Don't be shy to wack it with a piece of wood and a mace or hammer, this is how mine came off , pretty easily.
wack a bit,
unscrew the nut,
wack
unscrew
etc

By the way, just asking for my own information, does the smith FH have the same threads than the norinco one or you will rethread it?
thanks

No threads on the Smith muzzle brake, just like the original flash hider. The thing is held on with the splines and the original castle nut.

Did you get it off?
Dave

I just got it off, after a break for real life stuff for a few days. I was being too gentle with the hammer. :D

Thanks for all the advice!

That's the modifed one with the Smith brake in the middle. The top is a stock Norc with Smith mount and Bushnell 10x40 mildot and bipod; I have a Smith Vortex on order for it. The bottom one is Jeff Smith shortened with a Vortex and scout mount up front.
