Why is the FAL prohibited?

what is you definition of easy?
easy for me is walking my dog around the park on a nice warm sunny spring day.
if it doesnt match that kind of easy! then its not easily done.

Didn't say they had good reasoning, but if I had to put it on a scale, with an open bolt like a converted sten or BD-38 on one end and a Vz on the other, I'd say closer to the Open bolt, and just slightly harder than a Glock or 92 depending on if they left the bolt activated sear in (been a long time since I have even handled a FAL that I can't even tell you if it had that one in it). As I said though it shouldn't matter anyways since actually converting a firearm to full auto is already covered in the whole "going to spend time as bubbas buttbuddy" So If they really believed in their justice system they would let us own anything we wanted to even full autos. Instead under the guise of public safety they just keep trying to take away more.

It is too easy to convert to full auto. I've seen it done in less the 2 minutes when I was a reservist. I won't go into detail how but, a blindfolded monkey could do it. It's a shame too...it is a beautiful rifle and I would love to own one.

Problem with it is that the bolt activated sear is also a safety mechanism of sorts not letting the hammer go until the bolt is fully closed. Combine that with the primary sear design along with the selector only reducing the distance of travel of the trigger when in semi makes it an easy conversion. Seems that they dont realize that there are already laws against doing so unless they think that people are not going to follow laws they make...

So what?

Any rifle with a reciprocating charging handle can be converted to full auto in 30 seconds with a shoelace.

They banned the FN FAL because they didn't like the looks of it and they wanted to ban it. Any other reason was justification after the fact.

The only difference in a C1 and a C2 internals are the selector and the length of the plunger in the trigger mechanism.

Well, not quite, seems to me there was a case where a guy was charged, because he had a receiver that was labelled C2, a "fully automatic" firearm. Shows you just how stupid laws can be.

Grizz

Same rules in the states with M1 and M2 carbine receivers. the receivers are exactly the same but if yours says m2 you go to jail (if you don't have the paperwork that is).

I haven't been saying anything contrary to your statement, I'm just saying that we can't say that the gun is banned just because they didn't want us having it because they can use that excuse, and then put up a video of themselves converting it to full auto within 10 mins. Which is going to get the judge to side with them regardless of how smart you think you are.

Why was it prohibited....
Canadian firearms owners are viewed by the government as nothing but potential problems
Canadian firearms owners must be disarmed
The Liberals exist
Red Tories exist
The RCMP wanted to expand its empire
The rifle looked aggressive
The rifle was available in quantity
Sadly, this firearms prohibition nonsense still goes on very much today
Canadian firearms owners would have to be incredibly dumb not to trip over the RCMP's ban happy hi-jinx over the last few years, which interestingly began to target even rimfire firearms
I'm hoping that a majority Conservative government guts the Firearms Act, and brings in something actually aimed at criminals ( giving Mountie brass a smack-down in the process would go a long way too )

It's funny that the match stick trick is held as in inside trade secret 30 years later when pretty well nobody sees these rifles at all, and rifles are already having modded. It's Skull and Bones stuff.

It's prohibited because there are full auto variants that were used/built. The Canadian military used them for a while but never had full auto. IIRC the Brits had the full autos though I think.

Take the change lever (selector) from a C2 and put it in a C1 and it will fire full auto.....walt

Only if it has the bolt activated sear still in it. If not it is an untimed one which means it is closer to slamfiring and more dangerous/unreliable to the shooter. I am somewhat surprised that no mods have gotten all bent out of shape about our topic of discussion. Usually anything mentioning "full auto" gets frowned upon here. Nice to finally have a firearm mechanics talk though evrn if it was born from yet another political discussion.

Only saw this done when firing blank ammo on exercise, in any given infantry platoon of the
80s there would be six C2 gunners , two per section. This was a very well know "hack" as they say....walt

NO, nor will removing the selector from a C1 ;) Apparently, according to my sources, only the Canadian Navy had full auto capable C 1s.

They didn't do it with their last majority government, and I wouldn't bet lunch money on the likelihood of them getting another one...

My personal favorite...
It must have been "Designed to kill people"

So apparently the thought patterns of gun designers at the time a gun is designed influences how the gun MUST only be used... or not used for that matter.

I wonder if things would be different if the gun designer was thinking of planting corn when he designed it.
I mean seriously... he might have been a farmer... plus it digs a great hole.... try it!

Love this. Yup Canada gun laws, good times for all! My bud dumped his in the ocean rather then turn it in back in the day. It was a 80's movie night that decided our gun laws. Ohhh look at that one! Mark it down on the list. Mother great job by the people we vote in and pay to protect us. I have no record and am and always was a law abiding citizen, and read what they did about my Valmet M78 on red rifles. Yep, they want them all.

All the C1's I ever saw (in the 80') were already "converted autos".

Gratuitous C1 ####... circa 1984... man was I skinny.

...and of course, the C2 in all its uncontrollable full auto-ness..
