Why is the SKS so coveted in Canada?

I don't own one, nor do I want to. But I have shot a few.
None of the (5) I have shot were great. They were as accurate as throwing a slipper.
I get the whole 'cheap' surplus rounds, but really for what point is it if the holes aren't were you aim?
Am I just a 'bad' Canadian gun owner?
 
You are just a bad shot or your expected accuracy is too high. If you go with the expectation of hitting a human sized target at 100-200m the SKS will do that. There are always exceptions but all 5 or 6 that I have shot were equally as good as the last.

I can consistently hit the small green propane tanks at 100m with all of mine
 
So you have shot the Yugo M59/66 and didn’t find it accurate
I own 4 SKS,s and that’s the only one that I usually bring. I can hit a 6” gong at 200yds easily with iron sights. I would say that’s pretty damn accurate. The others do that or a little better at 100. I find the Yugo much better
 
It's readily available, cheap, reliable, dead simple to operate and clean, somewhat accurate (if you accept minute-of-man as "accurate") and takes any ammo. Also plenty of aftermarket customizations available to bubba it to your heart's content. Can't go wrong!

Either the five SKS you shot were bad, or the one guy who tried the 5 SKS was a poor shot... ;)

I used to think like this and avoided the SKS for many years. Then I learned about its history and function and how reliable it is with many types of ammo, in spite of not having an adjustable gas system like the Type 81 everyone is drooling over.

The SKS is a GREAT gun and as long as you respect it and ensure its proper function (most notably by recognizing the issues Cosmoline can cause with the floating firing pin), it will serve you to your dying day.

I have given many SKS to friends and family as Christmas gifts, plus 300 rounds of ammo and a PAL course which has got them into the game. After they finished their course, with PAL in hand, they got the rifle and ammo. Buying them for 150 bucks each a few years back and 50 bucks for the 300 rounds was well spent. I would say most have went on to buy more firearms and have got into hunting to fill the freezer ever fall because of the first push I gave them. All of them still have the SKS I gave to them as a gift to this day.

Hardly.

The SKS is a cheap semi auto centrefire rifle. It shoot cheap ammo. Its popular because it's cheap.

Cheap and fun.

The SKS is the metadone of the addict. When i need to buy a rifle but have nothing in mind, i just buy a SKS and it feel good, going on 1.5 dozen of the SKS.
 
They're cheap, rugged, fun to shoot and piss off the antis. They also come with an extendable pokey thing. My only complaint with them is the super short LOP and I don't exactly have long arms either.
 
If the choice is between an SKS and no gun, the SKS looks pretty good. It's also better than a bolt gun for a SHTF situation (sorry, but bolt guns are obsolete for serious use). All of the SKS that I've owned or fired would comfortably hit a man sized target at 200. That's more than you really need for an emergency tool, the ammo will leave a mark and the rifle won't let you down. The fact that the ammo is cheap and plentiful means people will have fired the gun before they need it, which is always nice.
