Why is the SKS so coveted in Canada?

Easy as heck to operate and to insanely cost effective to shoot. Don't know what you mean by inaccurate as I've taken down deer at 175yrds with irons and can hit gongs at 200 with ease and 300 if i really take my time. To each their own.

Happy to say I just like guns. Any gun. Junk or not. They are all interesting.
They happy part of the SKS back in the day when they was $99 and a big wooden case of ammo less than $130;
Shoot it til it smokes.
Keep shooting.
I worry about heating my expensive rifles.
I remember a friend asking me about cleaning my SKS?
Why ? Save the cleaning supplies, oil and patches , and buy another SKS. ( However, seeing the price nowadays, clean them)
An ugly gun? All them surplus guns have a face only a mother could love.
BUT they still look better than these new European slick looking rifles.
Kids live to shoot too.
Get them a phun ghun and go to the gravel pit.

I wouldn't say they are coveted, they are just cheap ugly junk that are purchased by kids who can't afford real guns.

Now that is ignorance at its best. I own many firearms some of them on the expensive side but I also own 2 SKS's. They are cheap to buy (or were), cheap to feed, easy to maintain and fun to shoot. They do exactly what they were designed to do every time, hit a man sized target out to 150-200 yards. If you can't do that it is your fault not SKS's. Are they finished like a Purdey, hell no but that is part of the charm. Not your taste, fine, no problem but don't put down others just because you don't like it.

I have owned at least 10+ different SKSs. All Russian and Chinese, haven't yet got my hands on a Yugo. Some were excellent and others beaters, some original and others in various aftermarket stocks. I have never had one that shot poorly. The worst one I had could still hit the paper repeatedly at 200m with good ammo.

If you don't like SKSs that's cool. If you hate them then that is your opinion and I can respect that but SKSs are not junk and there is nothing wrong with buying one.

And if you're going to hate on someone you don't know, who's minding their own business by having or choosing to shoot a SKS.... then you need to have a good look in the mirror.

I experiment with the 123 Hornady SST load and 300 BLK.

Accuracy is perfectly adequate for practical hunting range...200 yards.

Pretty sure if that 123 SST goes into both lungs of any N.A game(besides big Grizzly) it's dead.

Uglier than an old fence post BUT I wish I bought several when they were UNDER $200 at LeBarons several years back. I've shot a couple and was surprised at how accurate a cheap piece of poop can be. Pleasant to shoot and cheap as well. I was POSITIVE they were BANNED when the LIE-BERALS began to pile the list of items they disapprove of.
For a cheap firearm that would be IDEAL in the thick bush where we hunt deer, this is a great idea. IF only I would have purchased one 7-8-9 years ago. I remember when a friend bought a "FAMILY PACK" of 5 (?) for some unbelievably LOW price years back. Sometimes I wish I was born smart instead of incredibly good looking.

It's the wish. com gun of Canada. It's cheap, it's Chinese and it's ugly lol. And I refuse to own one.

The High Point 995TS is a cheap and ugly semi around the same price and no one really wants it but for some reason a rifle from 1000 years ago is "cool" and "you should get one". Talk about jumping off a bridge because your friends did it.

I've owned 7 or 8 so far at some point in time and I've only ever had 1 that was able to shoot "decent" groups (7"-8" at 100yds) and that was off a bench with a shooting rest lol. Had I known the prices of them would double and even triple I probably wouldn't have sold them 🤔

I’ve previously mentioned in an earlier post that the SKS rifle varies drastically in quality and how much use it’s already seen, but it also should be mentioned that the quality of the surplus ammo can vary wildly too from country to country too. The SKS is not a match grade gun and surplus ammo is not match grade either.

Hi,
I first really liked the SKS, came to doubt it, and then, after listening to a bunch of people here, bought one from another member.

And I ended up loving it! A commercial refurb from 1951 in a laminate stock, with an immaculate bore that is not chrome lined. Sure, the trigger is heavy with a lot of creep, but it breaks clean and consistently.

It shoots pretty well - 1" to 1.5" groups at 50 yards. Ammo is pretty cheap (even non-corrosive), and it's a blast to shoot with aperture sights.

The damn thing is built to last and it's simple to operate and break down for cleaning. I can't speak to the vast majority of them, but I will say that a good one is a great bush/truck gun.

It's a working person's rifle and to me, deserves a place in your gun safe if you like the 7.62x39 cartridge.

Cheers,
Neil

You do realize how easy it is for them to but it on the prohib list, eh?

Sure they're not registered, and they can't find them, but is it really as much fun shooting a gun you have to hide and run the risk of doing time?

The ones who do it might say that adds to the fun...kinda like having ### in a airplane washroom. Chance of getting caught adds to the thrill!

Can you provide an example of any legitimate firearm owner, who did time in prison for the simple offence of peaceful possession without a license?

Kinda fun to watch the Grumpy Old Men lose their minds over it actually. The same guys woulda poked fun at Lee Enfields back about 30 years ago...kick rocks, lol.
They are like a Jackall...loose tolerances and just work.
