Why isn't the AR 18 the AR 15 for Canada?

There seems to be a few manufacturers of AR15 rifle in Canada now, but with the AR15 always being restricted, I am curious why no manufacturer has taken it upon themselves to produce an AR 18 clone with modern features.

It seems like those would catch on like wild fire here, especially if they were updated and the aftermarket caught on.

So why hasn't it happened? No demand? No one willing to take the first step?

Thoughts?

I think it comes down to having much better platforms available in non restricted status over the AR180. If it's not a true ar15 or ar10 your money is probably better spent on a xcr,acr or one of the other proven NR rifles on the market

But hold on, the AR-180 is a stamped metal design and could be manufacutured and sold for much less than the xcr or acr. I agree with the OP that a modern version of this platform could sell like hot cakes if the price were right.

On the flip side, I'm sure they would eventually be banned by our overlords.

This rifle is one of my next purchases though...if I can find one (at the right time) :)

If you could get it in the $1K range, NR, with decent accuracy... Yah, sure, it would probably sell fairly well.

But you can't.

To get it at a price point where it would sell well, you need an economy of scale that the Canadian market simply won't support.

The market is flooded with NR black guns, Pick one that already available.

The market is flooded, and we suckers have set the price. We eat up $3000+ NR's worth half that, or less, because WE set the price.

"The dollar".... "import fees".... "we know you will bend over and ask for seconds"

Or take the budget option, the $1200 kel tec plastic fantastic. That has very little in common with an AR. For $1200 you can build a nice AR.

The problem is that South of the border nothing can compete with the AR when it comes to accuracy, cost, reliability and aftermarket support, and the Canadian market is a small fraction of what the US market is. How could any manufacturer make a rifle specifically for the Canadian market then only sell 1000 units at $1500 per unit and make a profit? Especially when there is a strong possibility that after all the work has been done and a prototype has been built it has to be sent into the RCMP for classification where they could for no good reason other than they feel like being ignorant that day make it restricted, then all that work and investment is lost.
If we had enough clout as a community to demand that the elected officials classify rifles based on facts rather than looks and fear mongering then our problems would be over and the AR would be non restricted. Unfortunately years of Lieberal propaganda and brainwashing has made us a minority and turned a lot of people against guns rather than just leaving us with people who like guns and people with no interest.

The AR-180 is prohibited in Canada its a 12-5. The AR-180B (non-restricted) I am told wasn't a great gun, and wasn't a great seller.
I have had a few AR-180s over the years they worked great but not as accurate as an AR-15.

Why did it take a dozen reponses for someone to post the obvious?

The AR-18 is prohibited as a fully automatic firearm. The semi auto variant AR-180 is prohibited as a named 12(5) firearm.

The only way to get the AR-180 into this country is to modify it so extensively the RCMP are forced to rule it isn't an AR-180 anymore. It's been done but it wasn't exactly trouble-free or apparently profitable. At that point why not design a whole new gun?

Metal stampings are actually very expensive to tool up. They only become cheap with scale. As mention, Canada can't support that scale to bring prices down.

I always wanted a 180b, Lucky for me I got to handle one at the range last summer. Its now on the list of guns to never buy.

You can buy Nodak AR-180B aluminium lower copies from ht tp://www.nodakspud.com/NDS-18S.htm "Canadian Customers please contact I Run Guns to purchase this product". I don't know if that would still be AR-180B.

Our version is the AR180B-2.
I love mine, zero modifications, never had a failure to anything, just keeps getting smoother and the trigger keeps getting better the more I shoot it.

The actual receiver is not much of a problem however the trunnion is. The expense of making a new trunnion would be cost prohibitive so a different solution had to be found.
So the other parts may be problematic too. I suppose you have to compete with the Type 97 pricewise.
