im curious, you see alot of marksmen in the US forces (im assuming these guys are the designated squad marksman but not sure) with the M14

i was curious why they picked that over a AR variant in .308, aside from the fact that they have a bunch already so all they had to do was acurize them

if that was the issue then they wouldnt issue the rest of the troops with ARs

I don't think that he was trying to say that the AR was flat out unreliable, just that there are better options out there. And I doubt that reliability is the primary and sole criteria for selection. There is logistics, cost, lobbying, etc.
This doesn't just go for small arms. Same goes for body armor, vehicles, etc. Being military issue doesn't make it the best out there.

Don't weapon systems need Military Approval.
The M14 has been around forever and lots of them everywhere.....Is there a .308 AR rifle that has D.o.D approval for issue to the troops? One manufacturer? or many? Maybe not many available?

knight armament SR25 / mk110 rifles are beginning to be issued in larger numbers throughout the marines as far as i know, perhaps army too.
theres your .308 AR right there coming into service

as for a comment on 5.56mm ar's being more reliable than the .308 .. i read an article where it was stated that 19% of troops claimed their M4 jammed during a firefight .. if i can find the article ill post it to back up this comment. but that doesnt really boast reliability in my books

That is the one I know of... If that is the only one, it is obvious to see why the M14 outnumbers any .308 AR platform tenfold. Just the sheer volume available of the M14.

i think because the round it use. in MOUT operation you need something that will go through wall and other things, such as car, doors. since m14 been in service more than close to 40 years they use to have alot of them but not anymore also use 308 that in the system .finally, m14 system is more reliable than m16 system (dont ask! but i never had SP on my m14)

a little .308 AR gun #### for everyone

i like the SR25/MK110 - but not the price! lol
