why Muzzle break a 22LR

If you're thinking about ISSF (olympic) rifle shooters... there are rules against muzzle brake, otherwise they probably would.

Heck, they are putting brakes on .177 air pistols... so they 'must' serve a purpose

thats a different scenario. especially with a pistol there is much less weight to hold the recoil in check and because of the design there will be more muzzle flip. depending on the competition if speed is necessary taking an extra 0.1 second to get back on target impacts your performance. all of these reasons arent issues with rifles though. just look at the picture above. the huge tail coming off the rear is there to control muzzle flip as much as possible and keep the gun in line with your arm.

on a rifle if you are rapid firing there will still be a little bit of muzzle flip. a compensator will help with that. however, muzzle flip isnt part of the accuracy. a gun which has a 1/4cm muzzle flip can be just as accurate as one which has a 1cm muzzle flip. accuracy readings are taken from a rested position. in this example they would improve useability not accuracy. accuracy is objective. it is calculated as independently of the shooter as possible (hence full rest setups).

The pistol above is used for 10M air pistol, which is a slow fire event (single shot). There is need to get back on target as fast as possible, since the gun will have to be lowered to reload. They put it on because it helps with the accuracy. Something to do with preventing gas (or air in this case) to over take the pellet/bullet and affecting its flight.

As mentioned before, the only reason why ISSF rifle shooters are not using one is because it's against the rule (Rifle equipment control guide 7.4.1.5)

There are muzzle breaks that direct the gases and sound forwards (at least that's what Royal Arms is selling) and I thought that looked cool and kind of tactical for a 22. If I can get one, I will. Just because the .22 is too .. loud....

I believe they're called linear comps" S&J hardware has a couple of nice ones. They re not as loud as other comps.

This may sound somewhat irrelevant but...I find that lower quality/lower velocity ammo cycles more reliably with my mock suppressor than it does without......FTF/FTE were cut from 8% to less than 3% with the "can" on. My assumption is the added back pressure (resistance to the escaping gas) facilitated the cycle?

For fun guns they look cool and can have slight effect but I won't use any muzzle device on a precision .22. They collect lead fouling that has to be cleaned periodically and offer zero benefit to shrinking groups. On a lightweight semi they can reduce muzzle flip but the benefit isn't any better than pulling the rifle into your shoulder.

maybe.... most muzzle breaks vent the gas away and wouldnt add backpressure. i proper can does add backpressure. the mock can IDK. if it does add backpressure that might be the case. i personally dont have any issue at all running subsonic loads since i have a low tension spring in it.

Put one on my savage bolt action. For two reasons. The barrel came threaded out of the box. And two, i had one laying around. Looks cool lol

my 10/22 takedown came with a flash hider. I took it off and put a thread protector on it. looks 100% better and two inches shorter

to me if it serves no purpose then it doesn't belong there. looking tacticool doesn't appeal to me at all

all the .22's out there that look like AR's don't do anything for me too
