Why Navy SEALs Hate the FN SCAR 17 - Vigilance Elite

I have read a tonne about them destroying basically every brand of optic on the market. I would assume that was early on and they fixed that issue?

I got to run a suppressed SCAR-L on course in Arizona... I REALLY wanted to love it due to my nostalgic feelings for the old FN C1. I HATED it. It was much heavier than piston ARs, and the balance was all wrong. Felt like REALLY cheap plastic.

I know the Scar 17S is up for an FRT soon, but seeing this I wouldn't spend $4-5k Canadian for this kind of reliability.

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I hadn't read anything about guys infield not liking the Scar either, this is gonna cause all kinds of drama.

I dunno.
they contradicted themselves concerning the weight. They said out of the box it was light, but after they put the elcan on it it got heavy.
Well..that isn't an issue with the rifle and anyone that has ever used a C7,8 with an elcan knows it's like strapping a cinder block to your rifle.
Then one of them states he picked the scar for the sandbox because it was 7.62..but then complained about the weight of the ammo..
I've never handled a scar but if you can switch the fire controls to either side..and the charging handle is in your way...............

If you're a righty, you're not gonna want to set it up to charge with your right, especially if it's jamming constantly. I think what he's getting at is ideally it would run reliably and have a non-reciprocating CH.

Interesting because the SCAR tends to get good points on reliability, but these are the first guys I have heard saying they are universally unreliable.

I had always wanted one of these, more so for the non res semi 308 (if we got there) but with the stag 10 here, I've no more desire for a scar. This video just solidifies that.

having lugged an FN C1 in a previous life..I love non reciprocating charging handles and the lack of one in that style on the ar platform is my biggest gripe about them.
I can understand him not liking it..just don't think it is a big enough reason to condemn the rifle.
the FTF's..most definitely though.

They have the gas selector on the suppressed setting during part of the video on top of that they are using some type of steel cased ammo that I would bet tons of money on it being some flavor of Wolf or Tula both of which are pretty much the worst quality ammo on earth. They are setup to run M80 and M118LR and that's it from the factory you can purchase larger and smaller sized gas ports (FN calls them Gas Jets) for the regulator to tune the rifle to other types of ammo. When I got my first 17 back in 2011 the the first bit of ammo I ran through it was Tula from Walmart and I had the same issues the dudes in the video had bought some Federal M80 surplus and never had a problem with it again as long as I ran decent quality ammo through it.

Scource: I am a SCAR Armorer and have 3 SCARs one is a 17S with over 34,000 rounds on it.

Meh, soldiers find a reason to complain about just about every piece of kit. It's a by-product of having a job that calls on you to do unpleasant things in unpleasant environments.

You’d definitely need to be aware of the reciprocating bolt it seems. I get the idea of simple is good, but it could easily get snagged and cause a stoppage when you really don’t want one.
