Sure, the 22mag round is defintely louder and more expensive than its 22LR cousin, but why no love?
Its advantages: Harder hitting, which equals into being more suitable for hutning, and is effected less from the wind in comparison to 22LR.

If you have a 22mag, share your experiences! If you don't feel free to chime in as to why you don't.
Personally, I'm getting a Savage 93FVSS within the coming months, and I can't wait.

With the introduction of the 17 hmr the good old 22 mag has sort of been forgotten. The 17 out does it it just about every category other than terminal energy. However, considering the game limitations of either round the 22 mag is kind of pointless. ( IMHO of course as there are still a few 22 mag fans out there )

If you want to plink and practice a lot the 22 lr wins due to ammo cost. However, if 22 mag is usually only a couple of bucks less than the 17 hmr so if reaching out at gophers is the task then the 17 wins.

I do not, intentionally: I definitely appreciate the .22 magnum for what it can do; but .22 rimfires for me are more for fun (and sometimes for grouse). I like to shoot them, and I like to bring the wife and kids out shooting them as well. We don't need more bang (oh man did I say that?), I guess. "Tradition" comes to mind here as well.

I will suggest cost even though many of my handloads cost me more than a .22 magnum round, because when I go out with the .22s we can chew through more ammo than I'd go through with many of my other guns.

Only my own opinion on that, I know many people who love their .22 mags for all the reasons you llist.

Happy shootin'

When I absolutely want to shoot small varmints at 100 yards or so and don't want to think about ballistics too much my .22 mag is what I grab. Noise can be a factor where I live so centerfires are less desirable. It is not the energy I need at that range but the flatter trajectory than say a .22 lr. Never owned a .17 hmr but I am sure it would do the same thing but within the limitations the .22 mag does what I need.

I bought the Savage 93FV in 22WMR and other than the crappy stock it came with I really like it. I changed the stock to a Boyds Tacticool.
The only issue I had with it is that the rounds didnt feed very well at all when I first got it.
I got some advice on rimfire central and bent the magazine mounting tab forward a tiny bit.
This raised the front of the mag upwards slightly and the feeding issue was cured .

.22 WMR still has lots of love.

Alot of shooters (myself included) have added or switched to HMR... the flatter trajectory and equal or better energy makes it an attractive option... but many people cling to their 22 mags... almost all manufacturers offer 22 WMR as an option in most configurations... so that should tell you that there is still a market for them, which means folks are still buying WMR guns... when the manufacturers stop chambering for the round, it might be time to worry (never gonna happen)... the millions of guns that are in ciruculation guarantee that there will always be ammo made.

I had debated myself between a .17 or .22 mag. I have decided that a .22 mag is the better option for ME. Where I live there is always a lot of wind and I like the higher ft/lb of energy that it will deliver. I've been keeping my eye on the savage 93 ss and the marlin. One of these fine rifles will soon be in my collection!

Weren't you the "Why no S&W M&P 15-22 love?" guy? :)

There is plenty of love for them. :) I can understand why people feel the urge to compare things...but .22lr, .22WMR, and .17HMR are all vastly different to my way of thinking. The magnum rimfires offer more punch at a higher ammo cost, which is why they're so often used for hunting. Almost exclusively for that in my case. If I want to go knock pop cans over or punch paper, it's the .22lr.

I hunted groundhogs in Ontario with an HMR for some time before giving a .22WMR a try. Never used the HMR for that again...after seeing how much more punch the .22WMR had. Here was that rifle, a Savage 93FV, mid-summer last year...with a groundhog that fell to a Hornady 30gr. V-Max.

Based on the performance of that gun, I invested in a better stock, better scope, new bolt handle and an EGW rail. Same gun, nicer furniture. :)

How's that for .22WMR love? ;)

I asked my local Savage dealer (who is also does warranty work for Savage) if he could machine-off my bolt knob, thread what's left, fit a tactical bolt knob on there...you know, like a Savage TR. His response~"why don't you just put a TR one on there?"

Done :) Not sure how common they are, or how available as a part, but it wasn't an overly expensive thing to get done.

i got a 22wmr 452 a while back. i am very happy with it. everyone like to shoot it. its great for what i do with it. i have got my mag rimfire and no need really for a 17hmr. infact everything i use my wmr for i could probly do with a 22lr. so got another one of them on their way too.

My hunting buddy and I both love our .22 mags. He has a marlin semi-auto 922 mag? or something like that and I have a Ruger 96 .22 mag. They out shine the .17 cals on bigger animals like coyotes and beavers. During deer season or any big game season in Sask. you are limited to a rimfire for preditors if you don't hold a tag for the game that is open. As always you have to know your limits and so far the .22mag has filled the bill. I got my first .22 mag as a combo cylinder on a ruger single six when I was 20 years old and I have owned some type of .22 mag ever since and thats 30+ years of predator hunting with .22 mag.

I inherited a Winchester 9422M from my dad. It was his favourite grouse, ptarmigan and rabbit rifle. It also looks beautiful. I have now taken a few ruffies with it (head shots:) and see why he loved it so much. My favourite rimfire

I used a 9422M for arctic hare. Excellent rifle for the job.
Bit of a niche caliber.
The Brno is outstanding; so are the Anschutz rifles.
Some .22Mag. ammunition and rifles are accurate enough to take advantage of the range potential. Some others, not so much.

I just came across a nice Savage 93FVSS with a 3x9x32 scope ( silver ) for $299. Used at a gun store in excellent condition. I'm going to be calling about it tomorrow! I see new without scope they go for $339 so not a bad deal.

To me, the 22WMR is a in-between round...

As in, if I want shoot lots, I pick the 22lr. If I need to dispatch small critters to 100M, I pick the 22 Hornet.

This been said, I'm sure I'll eventually end up with a 22WMR... for the days when I don't care to reload, nor pick up the empties.
