Why no sample packs of ammo??

So many shooters (and hunters) are in a constant search for the most accurate factory ammo for their rifle. Unfortunately you have to buy a box of it to try out which can cost anywhere from 50 to 100 bucks for a 20 round box and then find out in the first group of 5 rounds (or 3 rounds) that it doesn't shoot worth a hoot. That can leave up to 15 rounds or so that isn't worth much to you.

It would be just like the liquor stores, who offer a small sample (airline bottle) to see if you like it. This would lead to a lot more testing, sampling and sales of the various brands of ammo to shooters to see what their rifle likes best. Sample packs of 5 would encourage more testing.

I know I'd be tempted to try more brands.

Sampling factory ammo at the rate of 4 dollars a round and being stuck with most of a box of ammo that didn't work out has very limited appeal.

The same could be done with reloading components like bullets. Offer a sample pack of 10 bullets or so for a trial run.

What do you think - Would this encourage more shooter testing and overall be good for the industry???? Other companies have known for years that the best way to introduce a new product is to offer samples for trial.

That would be too good of an idea.....
Remember when Federal used to sell 24 packs of ammo? they could offer something like that again, with 4 different types of loads, 6 rounds of each type. Hornady too. At $74 and up for a box of premium factory ammo, it really sucks when your rifle doesn't like it.

rws was doing that in europe for most of the hunting calibers ... what we were doing at the hunting club was mixing ammo in different package with the same caliber so that was reducing the cost for each and try to find what was working better for the ones using factory ammo. but if you have the time, the space and the will reloading is way better not for saving but shooting what you want ...

I can't imagine why they would cost any more than a box full of premium ammo.
Even if they did cost more, it would still be a savings. It just cost me $180 to determine that my rifle likes terminal ascent more than eldx.....

I recall this being done before by Federal or some other major brand. Circa 1990 I think. Obviously if it had been profitable they would have continued with it, but they didn't.

It's probably a logistical nightmare, as ammo factories run huge volume of one type of ammo, then retool and run another batch of different ammo.

Not to mention why make packs of 5 or 6 when you have to buy packs of 20 to test it currently? Even if you only use 6rds, they sold 20.

Because it means that while a customer might buy 5 rounds to see if it has any potential at all to be precise in his rifle he probably won't if he has to shell out 80 bucks/box in an exploratory search.

Now if he does find that the initial purchase of 5 rounds resulted in a very good group he will in all likely hood buy an additional 1 or 2 boxes of 20 for further testing and maybe just maybe that becomes his go to brand. It is the same reason they sell miniature bottles of liquor. If you like it you will buy more. Simple marketing principle. Many companies do that. The idea is to get your target audience to at least try it.

It cost me 80 bucks to determine that my hunting rifle hates Fed hybrid hunter. It is marketed to be match performance in a hunting configuration. Best I could do off a front and rear bag rest was 2 MOA (Avg of 4 groups of 5). I'm now not totally eager to try terminal ascent or any of Federals other offerings. LOL

Sample packs would cost much more then regular boxs of ammo .

Not usually. Its common in the 22lr match ammo world, as well as match pellets, and as mentioned RWS sells them at the same cost as other ammo. I hoped to pick up some of the RWS boxes in 9.3X62, 7X57 and 308, but it seems no one is importing them.
