Why not the Ruger American LRT

simple test is to take a fired case from this rifle, insert back into the chamber. Try and remove it using a small screwdriver in the extractor slot. Use a really thin blade like an eyeglass screwdriver to simulate the extractor size.

It should be easy to engage the cartridge rim. If not, then the slot may not be deep enough to allow for proper engagement. The end of the extractor really doesn't need to be very wide... just long enough to reach fully into the slot in the barrel. since it is leaving marks, you can call that good.

Next is a weak extractor spring allowing the claws to open instead of grabbing the case.

Assume, feeding into the chamber is not a problem?

Feeding has never been a problem. Just extraction. That said, keeping the chamber clean has allowed me to have issue-free range visits where I shoot around 250 rds or so. So, with that, I'm ok with how it runs. I just wish there was a properly machined option with a wide and sharp claw face to get more purchase on the case when pulling it out.

Good reports on the LRT, thanks
Is the extractor still an issue or has it been remedied?
would like to find one at $765, closer to $900 seems the norm now

Ruger American is an underdog. My 16" barreled one dings the gong at 212yrd more often than expected.
And 10/22 mags, so that's cool. I so wish Ruger had made them compatible with 10/22 stocks, if so it'd probably be the most wide selling rimfire bolt gun.

Extractor is easy to tune, quick stoning to smooth the punched steel edges and give the spring a squeeze and it's been 100% reliable.

Until the aftermarket provides a properly machined extractor, same as what is available for the 10/22, I think it will be hit or miss as to reliability. Sure, you can modify the stamped steel version a bit, and maybe it will work, maybe it won't. I've found that a bit of sharpening on the extractor claw and regular cleaning of the chamber has improved my LRT's reliability enough for trouble-free range sessions of about 250 rounds. YMMV.

Had my LRT out again last night, testing ammo so far but S&B Cdn Match shoots as good as Eley Sport which is slightly better than Eley Team and better than CCI SV
CCI shot about as well as the Federal Automatch
two fail to extract in over 100 rnds, tough to say why as they popped out without any force

Ruger site fails to mention the stock is a wood composite material, solid sounding compared to a hollow tupperware
they also fail to mention the gun comes with an installed 30 moa rail, spec sheet just reads 'rail installed'

am set-up with 20 moa Burris Sig Zee rings so had to hold over 2 mils on the reticle for the 400m gong ) , ding ding

would like to get some more weight into the fore end , may replace the oem mlok with a heavier plate of sorts, it feels somewhat cheezy but is stable so far with the arc rail attached

Glad to hear you're having success with the rifle. I'm curious about the S&B Cdn Match ammo but have yet to find it locally so I can try a box or two. Interesting to hear that Fed Automatch performs similar to CCI SV. It's a lot cheaper than SV if you buy it in bulk.

What ARCA rail have you attached? How is it mounted to the stock?

I went with the MDT grnd-pod and rail combo, 10" as it was on the hook at the lgs
It just screwed right on to the Ruger rail

was surprised the cci didn't do better, but that was one trial, the cci was first in the line-up before winds died totally, more to go

isnt the LRT and the RPR the same rifle just with a different stock and a 4" longer barrel?
same action.
same trigger.
same barrel just longer.
same rail.
same magazine.
same oversized bolt nob.

Same action? Th LRT doesn't have 'adjustable bolt throw length'
IDK, do either one have a 'match' chamber?
RPR spec says 'target barrel", no such claim for LRT
Ruger is pretty lien on any details, even in a request for info to 'customer service', they just referred me to an independant magazine article

my interest was piqued by this thread, I ordered a LRT yesterday.
I was able to score one for $780 with free shipping.... and before anyone asks it was the last one.
my dad has a RPR so ill be able to sit with them side by side and compare them.
hell, I even have a base model RAR and a RAR Target edition one.
I can compare all 4 side by side now that I think about it!
now ill just need some time to do it!!!

Regarding the differences in barrel between the RPR and LRT... Normally I shoot CCI SV from my LRT and get acceptable results. I decided to try Federal Automatch which didn't perform well at all. I would have been lucky to keep it under 1.5" at 50yds where CCI SV can reliably do around 0.75" if I do my part.

However, Automatch performed a lot better in my friend's RPR. So, it makes me think there might be a different chamber in each barrel.

More time has passed, am shooting Eley Sport as it proved out over Team with the limited testing I did when new, but might revisit with some more ammo testing as the rifle seems to have settled some after 1000+ rounds through it
Sport bricks are available locally, but before buying more stock I want to do a re test

comment I may make is the rifle seems to have a bit of bounce, sight picture needs to be re-aquired after each shot, whether bipod or bags are used, slightly more with bipod as expected
I haven't shot enough high quality rifles to understand if this is expected or is a product of the composite stock configuration
anyone else experiences ?
