Why pick 5.5" over 4.75" in SSA's?

I've been looking at the various available single actions and I've noticed the 5.5" and 7.5" models are usually more popular (or more picked over) than the 4.75" ones.

Any reason I'm missing, beyond looks or longer sighting radius? Historical significance? SASS requirement?

In a SAA:

7-1/2" for the looks & sighting radius, a little added velocity as a hunting gun. Some people swear they balance the best...

5-1/2" is supposed to balance in your hand the best in .45 Colt...
 
The 4.75" was a civilian model made famous by gunfighters

The 7.5" was the standard issue SAA

Guessing the 5.5" was another civilian option, but don't quote me on that. :) If you want more information, I strongly suggest you talk to Russel at AWA Firearms in the US.

Really? In my own looking around it seems like the 4.75 is always out of stock when I've been shopping. The shorter barrel clears the holster sooner so I thought this was why they sell best due to the quick draw crowd.

I saw my first club level CA meet this past weekend. The revolvers used covered the entire range including a few that were enthusiastic about cap and ball. LOVED the smoke show.... :D
 
I have 4 Vaqueros with 4 5/8" barrels, tried a 5.5" one and I didn't like it. Depending on the props at some Cowboy Action Matches the shorter barrels are preferable.
 
the 4,75 inch one was too short
and the 7,5 inch was too long IMHO

thats why I went with the 357mag 6,5 inch ruger blackhawk
but then again I don't do SASS
 
I prefer the 4 3/4" barrel SAA's myself........ ;) :cool:
