Why Proper Bedding is Important?

So it's pretty, doesn't do anything more than a stock with less bedding, that hasn't been cut out extra big for more bedding compund. Come on Chuck..

Says you?

An even thickness and prudent amount of bedding cannot be a bad idea. What exactly is so precious in that filler that says it must stay. Hell, I know gunsmiths that have been at it for years that will take some of that filler out right to the shell in certain areas. We have seen pictures of chipped bedding on this very thread that says thin might not be the answer. Come on indeed.

For foam filled composite stocks, they usually suggest large load bearing pillars to take the recoil forces off the foam. I am unaware of any expanding foam which will offer a solid backing to anything.

Chuck, I think you didn't read my post completely.

Expanding foam is never a structural product but replacing it with a brittle product isn't solving anything.

You dont get a stronger foundation by first putting it on loose sand, even if you make the slab minus rebar, thicker.

Removing the foam but replacing it with a structural product is a very good idea. There are several ways this can be accomplished.

As I said, use the product in the manner it was designed to work and you will enjoy positive results.

There are many ways to the same destination. If your process works for you and your rifles shoot competitively, it's all good.

So I think bedding my Hogue Overmould stock would be a good idea, its got pillars already but lots of play around the lug. I also want to stiffen up the to the front sling mount, what product works in sythetics?

Just wanted to thank Mystic Precision again for starting this topic. It gave me the motivation to bed my mark II. I used Lepages steel epoxy and kiwi shoe polish with good results. I had one little air bubble that normally would not bother me, but after seeing some of the "visually" nice bedding jobs in this thread has caused me to go back and do a little touch up. So I will re-pull the stock tomorrow and see how she looks. On a side note the boyds stock is so close to the original savage action that almost the entire action length of bedding does look transparent, so I am happy about that.

spenom, very happy that this has inspired you to bed your Savage. Nice to hear that the inletting is tight too. That is a very nice change.

Appearance is nice but fit is more important.

Enjoy....

Jerry
