Why the 15th for opening day in Sask

Deer numbers are down through out the province. I guess it's serms way of saving a few deer. I'm not a fan of it but that's the way the cookie crumbled this year.

Along with what Sask_Hunter said,
I would guess it has something to do with the late spring and fawn crop. Give the babies an extra 2 weeks with mom before they get orphaned.

Good point. The fawns all have spots still and sadly moms get arrowed even when the little ones are around. I wish folks wouldn't do that or at least wait till rifle season or at least try to be sure the doe is dry. ( that takes some scouting effort ). I guess I'll just scout for a couple more weeks. The weather is nice and sitting in the stand and just watching is just as fun.

Out scouting last night and boy those fawns are small. I usually like to shoot does but think this year I'll either take a buck or go home empty handed. Good thread pointing out not to shoot does this year with tiny fawns.

Manitoba shortened it's deer seasons last year too. Now we're looking at a one buck limit this year. Doe tags are only available in a select few locales with abundant populations.

Damn bowhunters! I thought driving across fields were reserved for rifle hunters! Just kidding, you're right though. I'm sure some people don't realize that the crop has to come off the field before driving on it.

^^^^ technically, a hunter can assume permission given the land is not posted or fenced in any way.

I think they dropped the ball this year. I've seen one white tail this season, yet anybody can run out and get a white tail tag. On the other hand, there's so many mule deer it's crazy, and yet, you need to get drawn. In my area at least.

Also, weren't they trying to lower the population in certain zones with an earn-a-buck program? Bet they wish they hadn't done that now.

I was lucky and was drawn this year, so I've been hunting for the last couple days.
On that same note, if anybody has land in the saskatoon wildlife management zone (smz)... Wink wink... Nudge nudge...

draw elk season was moved to enable the farmers to get the crops off the fields.
this year is a trial and they might continue to do this.
as others have pointed out, deer numbers are down,so farmland deer rifle season is just
two weeks but still six weeks in the likes of fort ala corne (WMZ)

it will be the wild west up there this year!!!!

The crop season has changed, so must the hunting. Remember when the May long weekend generally marked the target to get crops in the grounf? Well that's changed, so hunting on that land must also change. Help the farmers, and they will recipricate by allowing responsible hunters on their property.

I'm not sure about that, but I have heard it before. I always ask permission. Do unto others ... Guess I understand why there are so many trucks running around with orange vests behind the wheel during rifle season. Any type of disresptful assumption of rights will only lead to more land off limits for hunting in the future.
Is that what the city guys do then is just head out for a day driving around looking for animals on land that is not posted? I'm just asking because like I said I can't believe the number of guys I see driving around during the hunting season.

I just saw in the guide pg29 where they say "please ask for landowner permission even if the land is not posted". It actually does not say you must.
