why the 3030?

whats the big hype over the 30-30? I have some old indian relatives of mine that swear by it for deer to moose. Ive even offered to buy one a 300 but my uncle said he didnt need it! is it that its light weight and maneuverable or what? i see it has its place in deep brush but i could see a 4570 doing that better than a 3030.
 
I know its a good gun, im not slandering it, i just think that there is a lot of better guns out there and what in particular makes people stick with it
 
Inside 150 yards it will get the job done with no fuss or muss. In lever actions they are light, compact and accurate. What more could you ask for. As Davemccarthy707 said you have to hunt not shoot.
 
i personally think that a 4570 would be better, although yes a 3030 would get the job done. i have a 3030 but dont see a need to use it.

I hear things like that said a lot about the .30-30. They are technically true, but I think that for the average hunter the phrase should be revised to "inside 75 yards".

150 yards is a long, long way for most eastern deer hunters, with any gun. When we're talking 30-30, we're usually talking about a lever-action with iron sights, often the buckhorns that came with it. 150 yards is well into Hail Mary territory.
 
In the days when I could actually see the rear semibuckhorn sight on my model 94, 100 yard shots were easy. Usually groups in the 10 or 9 ring. On a deer size target at 150 yards it is relatively easy assuming proper positioning of the target a good rest (ie tree etc) and patience of the shooter. I would not try that shot now unless I had a proper peep sight.
 
The rifles are light, short, easy to carry, quick to get on target and very little recoil, ammo is also quite inexpensive if you don't reload. 45/70s aren't usually as light, recoil alot more, and factory ammo is expensive.
 
Na a 30/30 is no good, don't you guys know that all the game in Canada has developed bullet proof hides and if you ante got a 300 magnum or better the critters are going to get away every time.

Cheap to buy the gun, cheap to buy the ammunition.

Also, the "daddy used it so why should I use anything else?" mentality.

I use 30-30 too, for me it just works and it's the best sized gun I have for wandering around in the bush. My preference, no other reason.
 
It's the love for it! I have many so called "better" hunting rifles, but I still take my pre '64 94 with Williams peep site out quite often, just cuz I wanna! ;)

Yes that's true BUT the 45-70 needs to be reloaded for decent power, most don't, quality 45-70 ammo is expensive, 30-30 is always on sale, 45-70 guns are heavier than most 30-30s, 30-30s are almost always more readily available & cheaper to buy, the average person can handle recoil of a 30 better than heavy loaded 45-70s, & finally 30-30s use bullets designed especially for 30-30 velocitys & as such always perform well.
 
The whitetail deer has become harder to kill in the last 40 years if you believe the gun media and the popular hunting shows on tv. The 30-30 remains popular due to the fact it works, is easy to carry and shoot and alot of people can fire it accurately unlike the big magnums because they don't flinch. I really don't understand why some people thing it takes a 300+ magnum to shoot a deer. SAme with moose. I have seen alot of big moose taken cleanly with one shot from a 308/303/30-06 but if you believe the media a 338 lapua is the minimum for moose.

BTW my favourite rifle is my old top eject win 94 in you guessed it 30-30. why? because it is accurate, adequate, light and portable, reliable as all get out and cheap to shoot.
